Episode 2804: What we do before during and after holy communion - Fr Ripperger
Fr. Chad Ripperger, a traditional Catholic priest and theologian, often emphasizes the reverence and preparation needed for receiving Holy Communion. Here’s an overview of his teachings about what to do before, during, and after receiving Holy Communion:
Before Holy Communion
State of Grace
Ensure you are in a state of grace by examining your conscience and going to confession if needed. Receiving Communion in mortal sin is a grave sacrilege.
Fasting
Observe the one-hour Eucharistic fast as prescribed by Church law. This helps focus the soul on the sacredness of the Eucharist.
Prayerful Preparation
Spend time in prayer, asking God for the grace to receive Him worthily.
Use prayers such as the Act of Contrition, Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas, or a personal reflection on the Eucharist.
Focus on Humility
Approach with humility, acknowledging your unworthiness, like the centurion: "Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof..." (Matthew 8:8).
During Holy Communion
Approach Reverently
Walk to the altar with solemnity, maintaining recollection and silence. Fr. Ripperger often advocates receiving Communion kneeling and on the tongue as a sign of reverence.
Be Attentive
Be fully conscious of the mystery you are receiving: the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. This is not symbolic but the real presence of Jesus.
Unite with Christ
As you receive, mentally express your love and gratitude to Jesus.
Offer intentions or ask for specific graces.
After Holy Communion
Thanksgiving
Spend time in silent prayer or use formal prayers of thanksgiving, such as the Anima Christi or the Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Thank God for the immense gift of Himself and reflect on the love He shows in the Eucharist.
Deep Union with Christ
Speak to Jesus in your heart as He is truly present within you. Offer Him your joys, sorrows, and intentions.
Renew Your Intentions
Ask for the grace to live a holy life and avoid sin.
Offer your Communion for the needs of the Church, your family, or the souls in purgatory.
Carry Christ with You
Live the rest of the day in the awareness that Christ is with you. Strive to maintain the graces received through acts of charity, patience, and holiness.
Key Emphases in Fr. Ripperger’s Teachings
Reverence: The Eucharist is the most sacred gift. Our preparation, reception, and thanksgiving should reflect its infinite value.
Spiritual Warfare: Receiving the Eucharist strengthens the soul against sin and evil, so approach it with the seriousness of one arming for battle.
Sanctification: Frequent, reverent reception of the Eucharist is central to growing in holiness and conforming to Christ.
