A man who allegedly burglarized a business at the Brentwood Junction shopping center last week fled from responding police officers on a bicycle, sparking a slow-speed pursuit caught on the patrol vehicle’s dashboard camera.

The Brentwood Police Department was alerted to the burglary on Dec. 13 after an alarm at a business on the 2400 block of Empire Avenue was triggered at around 6 a.m. Arriving officers spotted the burglary suspect, identified as 31-year-old Daniel Whelan, leaving the business through the rear entrance, police said.

As Whelan saw the police officers outside of the business, he grabbed a bicycle and began to pedal away, according to Brentwood PD. The responding officers initiated a pursuit of the bicyclist in their patrol vehicles with lights flashing and sirens blaring, video shared by police shows (watch in the player above).

The slow-speed chase is seen leading into a parking lot, where the bicyclist keeps a pace ahead of the police vehicle. The burglary suspect cuts through the back lot of a building before mounting a divider strip and comes tumbling down off the bike. As Whelan attempts to regain footing, he falls again and the pursuing officer grabs him.

Police recovered burglary tools, including a pry bar, knife and gloves, along with stolen property belonging to the business, authorities said. Whelan was arrested for burglary, possession of burglary tools and other related charges.
