Stimming & Comfort With The Theta Experience

When I was younger, I found immense comfort in lying back in a pool or bathtub with my ears submerged. This simple act muffled the external world, allowing me to focus inwardly as I hummed or made gentle sounds. It was a deeply calming experience, providing a sanctuary from sensory overload.

Many individuals on the autism spectrum share a profound connection to water. This attraction can offer solace but also poses risks, as some may seek the comfort of water without recognizing potential dangers. I often wonder if their experiences mirror my own—were they drawn to water for the same calming effects? If we had a better understanding would these potential tragedies be avoided?

In this video, titled Stimming & Comfort With The Theta Experience, I combine 4 Hz theta waves with underwater ambience to recreate that serene, immersive sensation. Theta waves are associated with deep relaxation and meditative states, making them ideal for this purpose.

Scientific studies support the calming effects of theta waves. Research indicates that theta activity can promote relaxation and enhance neuroplasticity, contributing to improved mental well-being.

Additionally, the sensory aspects of water have been found to benefit individuals with autism. Aquatic therapy, for instance, has been effective in improving social interactions and behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This project is a personal exploration of my experiences and a broader inquiry into the sensory connections that many on the spectrum share with water and to hopefully provide a safe alternative. I invite you to immerse yourself in this calming underwater world and reflect on the comfort and stillness it provides, and if you have one, a weighted blanket should greatly add to the effect.
