Wartac CQC / Close Quarters Pistol / Short 3

This is a brief look at a segment from Wartac CQC: Close Quarters Pistol. The course was taught by Richard Nance, co-founder of Wartac CQC. Richard was hosted by Dave Spaulding of Handgun Combatives, and the course was held at Miamisburg Sportsmen’s Club in Miamisburg, Ohio.

Wartac CQC is based out of California where Richard Nance is a full time, municipal police officer with a Northern California police department. During his 18+ year law enforcement career, Richard has served as a SWAT Team Leader, Firearms Instructor, and Defensive Tactics Instructor. Richard is a lifelong martial artist and holds a Blackbelt in the discipline of Karate.

I’m accustomed to two day pistol classes that have round counts anywhere from 600-1000 rounds. Most firearms classes are shooting-centric. CQP is about 300 rounds because its scope is learning to fight with your gun, or to counter an assailant's weapon before a fight turns into a firefight. In CQP the term that is placed at the forefront of your mind is “fighting in the hole.” Fighting in the hole refers to that double arm’s length distance where one finds themselves grappling with an opponent. That grappling might be due to a fumbled draw, or it might be because the bad guy got the drop on you and got inside your space before you could even think about going for a gun. Like Richard says “at arm’s length, it’s not just a shooting, it’s a fight!”
