The echidna, also known as the spiny anteater, is a small, egg-laying mammal native to Australia and New Guinea. It has a compact, round body covered in spines for protection, resembling a hedgehog. Echidnas have a long, slender snout used for detecting and consuming ants and termites, aided by their sticky tongue. They are solitary animals with strong claws for digging burrows and uncovering food. Echidnas are monotremes, one of the few mammals that lay eggs instead of giving live birth.
