Charles Dickens was already a highly successful writer, but the publication of A Christmas Carol in 1843 made him one of the most iconic figures associated with Christmas in popular culture. He wrote the story in just six weeks to raise funds for his family, as he was going through financial difficulties. The tale of Mr. Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas was an immediate success and has been highly influential in shaping modern Christmas celebrations, partly due to the traditions described in the book.
