Georgian Lawmaker Shot Dead in Parliament of Russia-Backed Abkhazia | Vantage with Palki Sharma

A lawmaker was shot dead at the Parliament of Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia, on Thursday, December 19, 2024. The lawmaker, Vakhtang Golandzia, died of the injuries sustained when he was reportedly shot at by another lawmaker, Adgur Kharazia, inside the Parliament building situated in the capital Sokhumi. Another lawmaker sustained bullet wounds at his arm, and is currently hospitalised. Situated off the coast of the Black Sea, Abkhazia broke from Georgia's control in a war after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, during which hundreds of thousands of ethnic Georgians fled. Russia has long backed the breakaway Georgian region, and considers it independent. Last month, Abkhazia was shaken by rare demonstrations, with agitators protesting against a deal that would boost Russian investment in the region.
