Mauritius: New PM Navin Ramgoolam Submits Fresh Proposal on The Chagos Deal to UK | Firstpost Africa
Mauritius' Chagos Island deal with the United Kingdom might be under threat. The new Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has submitted changes to the deal, under which his nation would gain control of the Chagos Islands seen as the UK's final colony in Africa. After years of talks, the UK's Labour government headed by Kier Starmer decided to cede its control on the islands, ending a dispute running for 50 years. But the deal signed between Starmer and Ramgoolam's predecessor Pravind Jugnauth had a catch. The UK under the agreement, would retain its control over the island of Diego Gracia which is home to a joint UK-US military base for a 99-year lease. But the new Mauritius prime minister has now submitted changes to this proposed deal. Watch for more.
