Somali Pirates Demand $10 Million in Ransom After Hijacking Chinese Fishing Vessel |Firstpost Africa

Somalia is once again seeing a rise in piracy activities after years of calm. In the latest, Somali pirates have allegedly hijacked a Chinese-owned fishing vessel with 18 crew members off the northeastern coast of Somalia. They have demanded a $10 million ransom to set the ship, which is reportedly held in the Puntland region, free. Reports suggest that the pirates had been offered $300,000 as ransom by a Somali company operating on behalf of the ship. However, they have refused that proposal. The government also did not provide any details about the demands of the pirates but stated that the ship’s license had expired. Somalia is steadily seeing a rise in piracy due to a drop in seasonal monsoon winds and a change in shipping routes due to rising Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
