Finding the Root Note of any lick or riff

I've found that locating the root note inside any lick or riff is incredibly helpful when dealing with key changes. I used to try and just slide up or down frets correspondingly, but I can forget that in the heat of the moment. Knowing where the root is allows me to find where I need to be at any time, regardless.
