The U.S. Congress Approved The Eighteenth Amendment, Initiating A Nationwide Prohibition On Alcohol. This Legislative Action Was Influenced By The Temperance Movement, With Groups Like The Anti-Saloon League And The Woman's Christian Temperance Union Advocating For The Ban. The Senate Passed The Resolution With A 65 To 20 Vote On August 1, 1917, Followed By The House's Approval On December 17, 1917, With A 282 To 128 Vote.
The Amendment Prohibited The Manufacture, Sale, And Transportation Of Intoxicating Liquors But Did Not Ban Personal Consumption. To Enforce This, Congress Passed The Volstead Act On October 28, 1919, Defining Intoxicating Liquors As Beverages Containing More Than 0.5% Alcohol. President Woodrow Wilson Vetoed The Act, But Congress Overrode His Veto, And The Act Became Law.
The Amendment Required Ratification By Three-Fourths Of The States. Mississippi Was The First To Ratify On January 7, 1918, And Nebraska Became The 36th State To Do So On January 16, 1919, Achieving The Necessary Threshold. The Amendment Took Effect On January 17, 1920, Marking The Start Of The Prohibition Era.
Prohibition Led To A Decline In Alcohol Consumption But Also Gave Rise To Illegal Activities, Including Bootlegging And Speakeasies. Enforcement Proved Challenging, And Public Support Waned Over Time. The Era Ended With The Ratification Of The Twenty-First Amendment On December 5, 1933, Repealing The Eighteenth Amendment.
The Passage Of The Eighteenth Amendment Remains A Significant Event In American History, Reflecting The Complexities Of Legislating Morality And The Challenges Of Enforcing Such Laws On A National Scale.
