Iran Halts Implementation of Stricter Hijab Law Amid Public Backlash

Iran has paused the implementation of a stricter hijab law that proposed harsher penalties for women who refuse to wear headscarves and for businesses that serve them. The legislation, approved by Parliament in 2023, included heavy fines, jail terms, and property confiscations. Vice President Shahram Dabiri announced the decision, calling the law "not feasible to implement." The delay follows widespread public defiance of hijab rules after the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, which sparked nationwide protests. Over 500 people were killed and 22,000 detained in the ensuing crackdown. Officials fear the new law could reignite similar unrest in Iran.
