Russian forces retreat as celebrations fill Syria’s streets

Setting aside their fears for the future, tens of thousands of people poured into squares after Friday prayers for mass 'Victory Day' rallies - invited there by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham - the rebel group whose lightning offensive ousted the Assad regime. The rebels' most potent enemy was not Assad's forces, but Russian armour and airpower. Today, a huge Russian military column withdrew north from Damascus.
