According to a preliminary investigation, the crash happened at approximately 8:50 p.m. on MD Route 261 near 17th Street. A deputy, stationed in a marked police cruiser, observed a gold Ford Mustang speeding southbound along MD Route 261. The deputy activated their emergency lights and began pursuing the vehicle.

The Mustang’s driver did not pull over, and the chase continued for approximately 1.6 miles. During the pursuit, the Mustang crossed the double yellow line into the opposing traffic lane, left the roadway, and struck a telephone pole. Deputies at the scene rendered medical aid to the driver until emergency medical services arrived and took over lifesaving efforts. Despite their attempts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
