"I put it on canvas so that I can hold it by the throat!" Roadside has revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled Exhibiting Forgiveness, marking the feature directorial debut of real life artist Titus Kaphar. This originally premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at MoMA's New Directors/New Films series, and a few other fests. It earned mostly positive reviews and plenty of buzz during the fest, especially for some of the performances and the artwork in it. André Holland stars in a powerful lead role as Tarrell, a Black artist on the path to success. His progress is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, named La'Ron, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they'll struggle & learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving. The cast includes Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, John Earl Jelks, Matthew Elam, and Ian Foreman. Reviews state the film "tackles the ghosts of the past, the scars of the present, and the promises of the future with nuance & grace." A very moving, honest, triumphant film marking the debut of a talented new filmmaker. Take a look below.

Exhibiting Forgiveness features a standout cast that includes André Holland and Andra Day.
The trailer evokes emotions of regret, anger, and unspoken feelings from the characters.
Director Titus Kaphar turned an autobiography into a sensitive drama focusing on fathers, sons, and forgiveness.
If you've been paying attention to the buzz around festival films throughout this year, you might have heard something about Exhibiting Forgiveness, a new movie that became a standout during events like the Sundance Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The sensitive drama is finally making its way to theaters, and Roadside Attractions has released the first trailer along with the release date: it hits theaters on October 18.
The atmospheric trailer for Exhibiting Forgiveness lets go of revealing major plot points in order to evoke the kind of feeling that you'll experience throughout the movie. Through the trailer you can easily feel that the characters are loaded with regret, unspoken feelings and anger, and it will be a long way before they can reach the state of mind described in the title of the movie.
The cast of Exhibiting Forgiveness also make the movie a must-watch: it features André Holland (American Horror Story), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holliday), John Earl Jelks (New Amsterdam), Matthew Elam (61st street) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard). Holland plays Tarrell, an admired painter whose artwork draws from a pained childhood. He's forced to confront the wounds he's been keeping at bay when he suddenly is visited by his estranged father La'Ron (Jelks).
'Exhibiting Forgiveness' Director Transformed a Documentary Into a Feature Film
Exhibiting Forgiveness is directed by Titus Kaphar, who made his feature film directing and writing debut with the title — and managed to become a standout during this year's Sundance Film Festival. During an interview to The Wrap earlier this year, Kaphar revealed that Exhibiting Forgiveness is an autobiography that started out as a documentary, but he felt that the format didn't quite grasp the kind of emotion and feeling he wanted to convey through the story. He stated:
“It’s rooted in my experience, but it had to go beyond that to be the kind of story that I wanted it to be. I started the project by making a documentary and realizing that that was insufficient to tell the story, the way that I wanted to tell the story. Because the documentary told me about why I was where I was right then. It didn’t help me understand how we got there. So, this script allowed us to have a conversation about fathers and sons and mothers and family — and fundamentally, forgiveness.”
Exhibiting Forgiveness premieres in theaters on October 18. You can watch the trailer above.

Exhibiting Forgiveness premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and its reception was overwhelmingly positive, with an approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars André Holland in the leading role, whose critically acclaimed performance in “Moonlight” leaves the audience with high expectations. In supporting roles, Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and John Earl Jelks also star.

Titus Kaphar’s directorial debut feature, Exhibiting Forgiveness, is a tender story of fathers and sons, bolstered by an arresting performance by its lead, André Holland.
He plays a blooming painter plagued by nightmares of his past. We meet Tarrell as he’s gasping for air after a violent dream. Images flash across the screen: a burning flame, a soot-covered pile of garbage, blood, darkness. When his terrors get particularly bad, Tarrell retreats to his home studio. The room, with its high ceilings tiled by skylights, cocoons him like a mother embracing a child. In one particularly gorgeous sequence, Tarrell, bathed in the relaxed glow of filtered sun, prepares for a day of work. He throws a record on while drinking his morning coffee, swivels in his office chair to pass time, washes his brushes, changes into his uniform, hangs a canvas and procrastinates as all artists do.

The Bottom Line
A harmonious match of actor and director.
Venue: Sundance Film Festival (U.S. Dramatic Competition)
Cast: André Holland, Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jaime Ray Newman, John Earl Jelks
Director-screenwriter: Titus Kaphar
1 hour 57 minutes
Kaphar, a MacArthur Genius award-winning painter, is a portraitist of Black life. In his most striking paintings, the artist mars his canvas. Kaphar cuts out whole figures or obscures them under thin layers of white paint. Sometimes, he’ll outline these erasures with a black marker, transforming characters into ghostly silhouettes.
With Exhibiting Forgiveness, the artist turns to film to further his interest in haunting, almost surrealist, representations of Black American life. His debut is about an explosive reconciliation between Tarrell and his father, La’Ron (the wonderful John Earl Jelks), a process initiated by a nostalgic mother (an always stellar Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) determined to repair her family’s emotional life. Kaphar, who also wrote the screenplay, draws many fine, if familiar, conclusions about the corrosive nature of generational trauma. The film considers this theme with a similar compassion to Miles Warren’s 2023 feature Bruiser, in which a young man finds himself caught in the middle of a calcified resentment between his father and a family friend. Both movies explore the traps of hypermasculinity and the inherited violence of silence.
Exhibiting Forgiveness kicks into gear with a visit from Tarrell’s shrill gallery representative, Janine (Jaime Ray Newman). She boasts about a review of his recent show and fawns over Tarrell’s unfinished works, against the artist’s gentle protestations. She wonders if this portends a future exhibition, but Tarrell can’t think about that. He’s distracted by his anxiety about an upcoming trip back home.
Tarrell wants to move his mother Joyce (Ellis-Taylor) closer to where he, his wife Aisha (Andra Day) and their son Jermaine (Daniel Michael Barriere) live. Kaphar’s screenplay is spare and, in an attempt to enhance its surrealist bent and make the story more allegorical, the film avoids details we start to crave. We don’t know where Tarrell calls or called home, but we know he’s created a sanctuary to guard himself from memories of his violent childhood. He wants his mother to join him in this bubble, but from a phone call they have later that day, we can tell she is reluctant.
The paintings Tarrell has been working on — snapshots of boys trying to jump a fence, scenes of someone mowing a lawn — are pulled from his nightmares. They help the tortured artist cope. Later, as he drives around his hometown heading toward his mother’s house, we recognize the wood-paneled exteriors and brick foundations. The town feels uncanny and Tarrell experiences it in an almost fugue state. Brief apparitions follow especially charged encounters. There are minor continuity issues when the film adheres to the fragmented structure of memory, particularly in the scenes stitched together to reveal the full context of Tarrell’s nightmare.
But there are more strengths than weaknesses in Exhibiting Forgiveness, especially when it comes to the performances, which hook us to the emotional grooves of Tarrell’s family. Holland has a gentle disposition, defined by toothy grins and concentrated gazes that make even the shameless bashful. Moonlight introduced many of us to his talents. In Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning coming-of-age story, he brings an electric, bordering on erotic, edge to his portrayal of Kevin, Chiron’s first love. The intimacy of the pair’s reunions is in Holland’s charged expressions: the furrowed brows as he carefully plates a meal; the wide eyes after cracking a joke; the coy smile bookending a knowing stare.
We saw Holland again in The Knick, a short-lived show in which he played a chronically underestimated doctor with grace. He returned to the big screen with High Flying Bird, which found him assuming the role of a coarse and fast-talking sports agent, and switched it up in Passing as a demure and too-easily mystified spouse.
In Exhibiting Forgiveness, Holland expands on the qualities he brought to Kevin in Moonlight. Tarrell is determined to raise his son more softly. He doesn’t want to steel Jermaine against the world, like his own father did to him. Kaphar includes many scenes between Tarrell and Jermaine, loving moments in which the father makes breakfast for his son or teaches the kid how to self-soothe through breathing exercises. The contrast between these interactions and later ones between Tarrell and La’Ron is stark. Holland’s paternal decency hardens into a studied politeness. His expressions — eyes devoid of kindness, lips pursed as he considers not just what he will say to his father but how — tell a parallel story of a hurting inner child.
Kaphar and his cinematographer Lachlan Milne’s (Minari) choice to lean into meditative close-ups lends Exhibiting Forgiveness a quiet intimacy and invites an appreciation for the subtleties in Holland’s performance. When Tarrell interviews his father — a disastrous attempt to fast-track whatever his mother hopes will happen — the painfulness of the experience comes from the way Holland rounds his shoulders, avoids the older man’s gaze and twists his mouth to signal impatience.
Kaphar’s compositions can be breathtaking. The director likes to highlight the most delicate parts of his scenes. Take, for example, when Tarrell and his mother argue about the Bible while watching a pickup game at the park. Kaphar, at first, takes a wide view of the concrete court populated by Black men. Then, he moves in and slows down, focusing on a moment when the hands of two players cross, for a second looking like they are clasped. How often do we see representations of this kind of intimacy?
Exhibiting Forgiveness is preoccupied by questions of love and attachment, and there’s pleasure in witnessing Kaphar’s exploration, even when it stumbles. The director opens the film with a quote from James Baldwin, a consummate advocate for love and expert in strained paternal relations. It’s about how the ties between fathers and sons extend beyond the biological. But as I revisited Baldwin’s words in “The Devil Finds Work,” I couldn’t help but sense a connection to Kaphar’s film in another quote. “He formed me, and he raised me, and he did not let me starve,” Baldwin writes of his own father, with whom he had a frightening relationship, “and he gave me something, however harshly, and however little I wanted it, which prepared me for an impending horror which he could not prevent.”

Kaphar's feature debut is the type of transcendent experience that could make you confront your own demons and familial traumas.
Acclaimed artist Titus Kaphar, celebrated for his oil and collage paintings depicting contemporary African-American life, draws from his own journey as a struggling artist in his feature film debut, "Exhibiting Forgiveness."
The film stars Andre Holland ("Moonlight") as a rising painter whose career and family life become unexpectedly and frustratingly intertwined. Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
The cast also features critically acclaimed performances from Andra Day ("The United States vs. Billie Holiday"), Oscar-nominated actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor ("King Richard"), and veteran character actor John Earl Jelks. Despite its critical acclaim, the film opened in theaters last October with little fanfare.
Now, "Exhibiting Forgiveness" gets a second chance to find an audience as it debuts this week on VOD and digital platforms. For those interested, the official trailer is available above, and the film is now ready for download on VOD.

Jharrel Jerome, Zhao Tao Named Toronto International Film Festival Honorees
Award-winning actor and rapper Jharrel Jerome and award-winning actor Zhao Tao have been named Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Award honorees.
Jerome will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award, while Tao will be presented with the TIFF Special Tribute Award.
Star of “Moonlight” and “When They See Us,” Jerome will return to the festival for the premiere of William Goldenberg’s “Unstoppable” where he’ll play professional wrestler Anthony Robles. Tao was ranked eighth among the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century by the New York Times in 2020. Her collaborations with director Jia Zhang-Ke have produced renowned films like “Still Life” and “Mountains May Depart” (TIFF’ 15.) She returns to the festival for the North American Premiere of “Caught by the Tides,” where she takes center stage with her portrayal of Qiaoqiao.
“From ‘Moonlight’ to ‘Unstoppable,’ Jharrel Jerome’s depth, strength and vulnerability on screen have made him one of his generation’s finest actors. It’s an honor to recognize his outstanding body of work with the TIFF Tribute Performer Award,” Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO, said in a statement. “In her collaborations with director Jia Zhang-Ke, the TIFF Special Tribute honouree Zhao Tao has captured the complexity and significance of China’s galvanizing change. Hers is a signature face of our 21st century, and her work in ‘Caught by the Tides’ stands with her very best.”
The TIFF Tribute Awards gala will take place on Sept. 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
World Premiere of “Music By John Williams” Documentary To Open AFI Fest 2024
The American Film Institute has revealed that the world premiere of Lucasfilm’s documentary “Music By John Williams” will open AFI Fest 2024 on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The documentary chronicles the life of the prolific film composer from his early days as a jazz pianist to his five Oscar wins, featuring interviews from Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kate Capshaw, Gustavo Dudamel, J.J. Abrams, Chris Martin, Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, George Lucas and more.
“John Williams is an American icon with a true and timeless global impact,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “One could say we are ‘over the moon’ to host the world premiere of the film, but that sentiment would hardly soar without the music of ‘E.T. THE Extra-Terrestrial.’”
HPA Announces 2024 Engineering Excellence Award Recipients
The Hollywood Professional Association Awards committee has named Adobe, Disguise and Cuebric as recipients of the coveted HPA Award for Engineering Excellence.
The honors, which will be presented at this year’s HPA Awards gala on November 7 at the Television Academy in Los Angeles, highlight outstanding technical and creative advancements across media, content production, finishing, distribution, and archiving.
“As our industry continues to evolve,” comments Joachim Zell, Chair of the HPA Awards Engineering Committee, “it is crucial that we highlight the companies and individuals driving change. The Engineering Excellence awards are dedicated to celebrating these innovators. This year’s submissions were incredibly inspiring, making the judging process both engaging and highly competitive. Congratulations to all the submitters, and a special congratulations to the winners! We look forward to celebrating with you on November 7th.”
The award selection process is determined by a distinguished panel of industry judges who review submissions and video presentations before gathering to hear detailed pitches from finalists and vote on the most exceptional technologies.
The official winners of the 2024 HPA Award for Engineering Excellence are below:
● Adobe: Enhance Speech in Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro’s Enhance Speech uses AI to remove background noise and improve poorly recorded dialogue, making it sound as if it was recorded in a professional studio. With Enhance Speech, post-production pros all over the world are saving valuable time otherwise spent on tedious dialog clean-up by enhancing the clarity and quality of voice recordings in a click.
● Disguise and Cuebric: AI-Driven 2.5D Workflow
In partnership, Disguise and Cuebric have developed a 2.5D workflow that bridges the gap between 2D and 3D, combining the benefits of both. This workflow, composed of multiple layers, each of which has its own shape generated by AI from the original 2D image, allows filmmakers to add depth to their images without building 3D scenes. It addresses parallax issues inherent in 2D, while avoiding the costs and time associated with 3D environment creation, enabling creators to move from concept to camera efficiently.
● Evercast: Evercast for Apple Vision Pro
Evercast for Apple Vision Pro facilitates spatial collaboration and introduces new possibilities for interaction and storytelling. Designed for production professionals, the app allows life-size collaboration as users stream content with low latency, high resolution, frame accuracy, color precision, and spatial audio. It supports every stage of production, from traditional 2D content to fully immersive experiences crafted specifically for the Apple Vision Pro.
The HPA Awards gala will honor creative winners as well as the Charles S. Swartz Award recipient, FotoKem. Nominations for the 19 creative categories will be announced in October.
