Tbilisi is Holding Elections for a New President
Tbilisi is holding elections for a new president. For the first time in the country's history, he is being elected not by popular vote, but by a 300-member electoral college, half of which consists of deputies and half of which are regional representatives. Since the ruling Georgian Dream party won the parliamentary elections and has an advantage in regional government bodies, it has a solid majority in the electoral college.
And in the presidential elections, essentially only one candidate remained - Mikheil Kavelashvili, representing the Georgian Dream.
The current president, Salome Zurabishvili, has refused to put forward her candidacy. She supports the protests in the country and claims that the current presidential elections are illegitimate. Zurabishvili plans to consider herself "president" no matter what the outcome and refuses to resign.
Today she came to another protest action at the parliament building.
