Son of the Fierce Ages!

Episode One hundred and Thirty.

The Star Stone.

Although the son of Crao had taken refuge in the basin, the icy arrows of the cold still harassed him, and the wind threatened his fire.
The flames danced in the middle of the wall of stones with which he had protected it.
Happily, Rahan has no shortage of wood!

The basin was lined with dead trees, and covered with curious, light round stones.
No doubt, they were thrown here in the past during the anger of the "Grumbling Mountain"!

He remembered the "Night of Tragedy" of his childhood and the anger of the "Blue Mountain" during which his entire clan had been decimated.

A sudden explosion tore him away from this painful memory. A stone whistled past his ears.
Varoom!

Page Two.

An fell thirty paces away.
It was the heat of the fire that cracked this pebble!
But. But. Rahan must be dreaming!

This stone which had burst like an egg, sparkled with a thousand purple and green lights.
Rahan has never seen anything so beautiful!

He did not have time to be more amazed.
A new explosion sounded near the fire and.
Argh!

The spirit of the "Star Stones" has finally come among us!
He will bring us happiness and peace!
Unconscious, he did not hear the children descending into the basin.

Uh, Uh. What if he is dead!?
Spirits do not die, Nouak! See, look, he moved!
The son of Crao began to recover himself.

Nouak and Gork greet you, spirit of good! They will be your faithful servants.
Rahan was confused.
Page Three.

When we heard the two thunderclaps, we ran.
But we arrived too late to see you spring from the great star-stone!

How did you manage to get out of the big stone, spirit of good!?
The children pointed to a huge rock in the middle of the basin.
The son of Crao smiled.

Rahan is not a spirit, little men! He is only a simple hunter made of flesh and blood.
And it is the fire that has made these strange stones burst.

Rahan could not know that these stones were in fact geodes, born from volcanic eruptions.
Hollow mineral masses whose interiors, over the millennia, have become covered with crystals.

But why are you roaming around like this in the middle of the night?
Do you not have a clan?
Yes! We each had a clan!
But we were chased out of it!
Our two clans wage an endless war.
They fight over everything! For game, for a spring, for a cave.

Page Four.

But Gork and I one day helped each other to escape from the "Mud-that-devours."
And we became brothers.

But we have been banished by our clans!
That is why we live alone waiting for the spirit of good to finally appear!

The spirit of good?
Yes, both our clans say that a good and generous spirit sleeps in the heart of the "Great-stone-of-the-stars."

And everyone thinks that only the reincarnation of the spirit will bring back happiness and harmony! Alas, since you are not the spirit, the war will continue among ours!

Rahan will go find the leaders of your clans!
He will convince them to treat each other like you do yourselves!
Until dawn, the son of Crao tried to calm the young men.

The sky was turning red when.
The “Four Hands”!
Here and there at the edge of the basin, large apes suddenly stood up.

Page Five.

A rain of pebbles immediately fell on Rahan and the children.
Vragh! Argh!
This way! Quickly! Quickly!

The stones flashed on all sides, releasing sparkling crystals.
The "Four-Hands" are surrounding us! They are going to crush us under the "Star-Stones"!

But we will kill several before they kill us!
No! Wait!
As Gork and Nouak drew their bows, Rahan objected.

And emerged upright, despite the hail of stones.
The "Four-Hands" are very cowardly to attack little men! Is their leader afraid to face Rahan in a fair fight!?

He had barely issued this challenge when a large gorilla broke away from the others and descended heavily into the basin.
Rahan is waiting for you, "Four-Hands"! May our fight be fair!

A moment later a terrible hand-to-hand fight began. The children, panting, followed all the phases.
I think "Fire-Hair" lied to us! A simple hunter would not have this courage!

Page Six.

Ten times the son of Crao was thrown to the ground. Ten times, he returned to the attack!
Rahan appreciates your strength, "Four-Hands"! But he will not bow!

At one point, however, the children thought Rahan was lost.
He had just been thrown off balance again and the gorilla was brandishing a large rock.
Greek!

With a jerk of his hips Rahan avoided the projectile which burst like a nut on another "star-stone"
Argh!

Rahan had said “A fair fight, four-hands”!
Clinging to the hairy legs of the great ape, the son of Crao was already taking the initiative!

Argh!
Having knocked his opponent over, he pinned him to the ground with a relentless hold.

You have found your master, four-hands! Order your people to leave!
The grip became even firmer, more painful too, and.

Page Seven.

The spirit has won!
The gorilla on the ground had given an order to his fellow gorillas who were retreating.
Greek!

You can join them! No? You prefer to stay with us?
Respectful of the force that had just triumphed over his own, the gorilla remained prostrate near his conqueror!

Nouak and Gork cheered the son of Crao.
You have just proven that you are indeed the spirit of good that we have been waiting for!
The spirit of the star-stone!

Rahan keeps telling you that he is not a "Spirit", little men!
But who knows? Maybe he can become one!?

You say that only a spirit springing from the star stone can bring harmony between your clans, is that so?

This is indeed what our people believe!
So you're going to help Rahan! Here is what we're going to do.

Page Eight.

Two days later, at the camp of Nouak.
What are you doing here again, Nouak! Our clan has banished you, and.
It is "The spirit of good" that sends me, Tou-Nag!
I heard his voice in the basin of the "mountain-that-thunders"!

You heard, brothers! All of us to the basin!

Soon the hostile clans found themselves at the edge of the basin.

Page Nine.

Hah!
The sharp edges of the crystals wounded Rahan who, with a superhuman effort, Lifted the lid of the strange tomb of stone.

This one finally tipped over and the beguiled clans saw the “Spirit” standing up in the hollow of the giant "Geode", in the green and purple shimmer of the marvelous crystals.

The spirit of the star-stone asks you to live from now on as brothers, as you have the example set for your clans.
That of Nouak and Gork!

Uh. Uh. How can the spirit know us?
The children's surprise was feigned. Had they not promised to keep the secret?

They would not reveal how Rahan, remembering the hollow stones bursting in the heat of his fire, had had the idea of lighting a fire around the "Great-stone-of-stars."
A fire that they had to keep going all day.

Page Ten.

Before the stone shattered and split in two, as the hunter with the "Fire Hair" had wished.
We have succeeded, little ones!

No! Nouak and Gorg would not say how this hunter had slipped into the cold "Geode".
You will soon be able to alert your clans, little men!

Nor how, with the help of a docile "Four-Hands", they had painfully but perfectly closed it!
Go find yours "Four-hands." Rahan thanks you.

And now Rahan answered the cheers, a man with words of wisdom and friendship.
He knew the children would betray him before he spoke himself. For he would speak the truth!

This trick of the "Star-Stone" had allowed him a connection that would otherwise probably have been impossible.
But when he had gained the trust of the clans, he would reveal this trick.
