On May 6, 1944, the destroyer escort USS Buckley was racing to intercept the German U-boat U-66. After an American patrol plane detected the submarine via radar and relayed the location to a US Navy hunter-killer group, the USS Buckley tracked down the U-boat and engaged it in a fierce battle. During the confrontation, the USS Buckley rammed the submarine, and the struggle escalated to hand-to-hand combat aboard the ship. At one point, the captain of the USS Buckley gave the rare command, "Stand by to repel boarders!"
