This new headset from Thunelec offers plenty of features and at an Amazon price of £42 before discounts - yes, there are always discounts - it is by no means the cheapest out there. The main selling points for this headset are the colour LCD screen built into the charging case, ANC noise reduction, and the latest Bluetooth 5.4 technology.

In the branded but rather plain box, you receive the earbuds, charging case, charging cable, three sets of differently sized gels (one fitted) and a small but decent quality user guide. Build quality all feels good and the product has a rather upscale feel to it. The buds are easy to manipulate in and out of the case and are comfortable to wear.

One of the main selling points of this headset is the charging case, which features a LCD touchscreen control panel on the front. On the underside of the case is the USB-C charging port, an on/off button and a reset aperture.

Pairing to my phone was nice and simple, with voice confirmation when needed. Removing the buds from the case the first time set them to pairing mode, they showed up as 'U9' on my phone's Bluetooth settings screen and pairing took place automatically. Subsequent times the pairing took place entirely transparently and with no input from me needed.

The interactive LCD screen case offers quite a few features and most of these do actually work, but I doubt if I will ever use them much. Here are some of the features on offer

Wallpaper
A small selection of non customisable wallpapers is available.
Language
A small choice of on screen languages
Screen Brightness
Brightness can be changed to a few preset levels.
Playback Timer
Some preset auto-off timers are available
EQ
Five EQ presets are available and they do work but not necessarily for the better.
ANC/Transparent Modes
Do not work in any useful way
Audio Volume
Slider Works OK
Track Control
Play/Pause, Back and Forward work OK
Flashlight
Turns the screen into a (very) mini torch
Find Headset
Works well for both or either bud – but is a bit faint
Camera Control
Would not work with my phone but may work on yours

Here is a full list of the screen control features:
ANC, Call Handling, Music Control, Audio Volume, Timer, Alarm,
Brightness, Language, Screen Lock, Lost Bud Finder, Flashlight, Clock, Alarm, Camera Control, Charging Status.

Another of the main selling points is the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) feature but this is not much use. The voice alert tells me it is switched on, but I cannot say I have noticed much difference when it is on other than a faint background hiss. The transparent mode works after a fashion with outside sound now louder than before but overlaid with a very pronounced and deeply annoying hiss.

As regards sound quality, this was something of a letdown, I found the sound to be very toppy, with a clear and sharp upper range, clean and distinct mid tones but with very little bass. Using the EQ preset did help to an extent but not enough for me. Of course, sound quality is very much a matter of taste and so others might well delight in the clean, well defined and prominent high end audio.

So there it is. This is a headset with an abundance of features, some of them working better than others, and a clean but distinctly toppy sound which some may enjoy and others, including me, not. At £42 it is not cheap but discounts are already available and I would expect to pay less still in the future.
