Metro police revealed Thursday what happened at a south valley resort moments before the fatal shooting of an armed man who was barricaded in a room.
It happened on Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. when officers received a call of a suicide attempt at the South Point resort in the 9700 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard.
The officer involved in the shooting was identified as LVMPD SWAT Officer Zachary Adam, 45, who has been with the department since 2006.
The police investigation revealed that Adam fired one round with a rifle.
Asst. Sheriff Dori Koren identified the victim as Cesar Reyes II, 26. Reyes was armed with a shotgun and a semi-automatic handgun.
Reyes’s family initially contacted hotel staff and requested a welfare check after they found a suicide note left at his home in California, Koren said. Hotel security knocked on Reyes’ door but did not get a response.
Upon entering, they found the safety latch on the door was in use, and that is when staff reported hearing the sound of a firearm being racked inside the room. The hotel staff then called the police for assistance, according to police.
When officers arrived, they attempted to contact Reyes, but he did not respond for several hours. Police then deemed the situation a barricade and a SWAT team moved in to assist. An explosive device was used by SWAT officers to open the door.
When the door finally opened, Reyes was seen armed and attempting to run out of the room and into the hallway, police said. As he was seen running out of the room, he then tripped over a police robot which caused him to drop his shotgun. Reyes then picked up his shotgun and ran toward Adam and his partner, according to police.
Officers gave Reyes multiple commands for Reyes to drop his weapon, but he continued to approach them. Adam fired one round that struck Reyes and brought him to the ground. He was then taken into custody and given medical aid, but he was pronounced dead moments later, police stated.
Had Reyes survived, he would have been charged with two counts of assault on a protective person with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer with a firearm.
