Russia launched a large-scale early morning missile barrage targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stating that 93 missiles were fired. The strikes severely damaged Ukrainian power plants, according to energy company DTEK. The attack came a day after the Kremlin vowed to respond to Ukraine's use of US-supplied ATACMS missiles in an airfield strike. Zelensky warned that Putin remains capable of producing missiles and called for a strong global reaction, stating, “A massive attack must be met with a massive reaction.”

In the US, President-elect Donald Trump criticised Ukraine's use of American missiles within Russian territory, expressing concern over escalating the war. Meanwhile, the US announced a $500 million weapons package for Ukraine, with a senior official confirming a historic effort to deliver critical military supplies before mid-January.

Russia reported capturing 300 square kilometres in Ukraine over the past month and advancing towards Pokrovsk, a critical logistics hub. Ukrainian forces acknowledged significant losses near the city, which could impact supply lines and the steel industry. The fall of Pokrovsk would mark one of Ukraine's largest setbacks in recent months.
