The Behavior of Our Children Reflects That of Our Own

This came to my head as a goldfish wrapper fell out of my truck.

It fell to the ground, I looked at it, then smiled.

It reminded me of how damn goofy my kids are, how much I love them, and how much I'm going to miss them.

I've told them to put their wrappers away millions of times and yet they still forget.

It annoys me.

Why can't they just listen?

What does it really matter?

They are full of joy.
They have lots of friends.
They're extremely empathetic and nice.
They're athletic and successful in what they do.
They love me and their mom more than anything and the relationship we have with our kids is unmatched.

Why would I care about a goldfish wrapper falling out of my truck?

If I had an emotional outburst from that trigger, that would only prove that I myself have work to do.

They are kids and they will do lots of dumb things for years.

I'm 37 and I still do lots of dumb things.

Nothing they do is worth ruining my relationship with them.

When these little inconveniences and annoyances come up, my new strategy is to think about the parts of them that I love and smile.
