n December 13, 2024, at 4:55 a.m., CGPD Officers responded to the report of a structure fire in the 100 block of East Ash Avenue. Officer Samuel was the first to arrive on the scene.

Officer Samuel exited his patrol unit and could hear someone yelling for help from the rear of the residence. While shouting back to the resident, he proceeded to the backyard to find him. Officer Samuel located the victim, who was trapped inside the house behind the back door which was secured by an additional steel security door with a padlock on it. There was already heavy smoke and heat coming from the residence.

Officer Samuel worked diligently to break the padlock, simultaneously asking the man questions and telling him that he was going to help him and get him out. Ultimately, Officer Samuel grabbed the entire steel door and ripped it off the frame, freeing the trapped homeowner. Additional CGPD Officers arrived and assisted by ensuring there were no other occupants in the house.

The homeowner was evaluated and treated on the scene. Three Police Officers were evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation. Two of them were transported to Banner Casa Grande Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Officer Samuel was one of the two and was also treated for lacerations to both hands and burn blisters on one hand. Fortunately, everyone is expected to fully recover.
