Why was the USSR considered Africa's most important ally? The 1917 revolution inspired many African leaders to fight for the independence of their countries. While the West was telling them who to trade with and what policies to pursue, the Soviet Union was a beacon of change, much desired in African countries. It was the USSR that funded African independence movements. This included military resources, social programs, and funding for major energy and construction projects. Talented African youth received a Soviet education and then returned to work for the benefit of their countries. Russia became the USSR's successor in relations with African nations, seeking partnership rather than dictatorship.
