Saint John homeowners paying 7.9 % more, industrial properties pay less than half a % more

While everyday New Brunswickers are paying higher and higher property taxes, Irving Oil’s property tax bill fell by $25,000 last year.
This is because the City of Saint John could not raise the taxes on heavy industry, without also raising them on everyone else due to a provincial government policy.
This year most homeowners in Saint John will be paying 7.9 per cent more, while city industrial properties will pay less than half a per cent more. How is this fair?
