Ayalon served as head of Shin Bet from right after the Rabin assassination in 1995 (after Rabin himself requested his appointment a year before he was killed) and until 2000 and is considered as the best head of Shin Bet Israel had in the last three decades at least.

Prior to that he spent 33 years in the Israeli Navy, most of it in the Navy Seals unit which he eventually became the commander of and later on the commander of the Navy which was his last role before being appointed as head of Shin Bet.

After retiring from Shin Bet, he became a peace activist and also served a few years as a Member of the Knesset for the labour party, including a short stint as Minister in the cabinet of Ehud Olmert (now a convicted felon who did jail time for accepting bribes).
