"Are you okay, Elisabeth?" IFC Films has revealed a teaser trailer for Armand, a Norwegian film marking the feature directorial debut of Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel - who just so happens to be Ingmar Bergman's grandson. This film initially premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and it played at tons of other festivals including Vancouver, Edinburgh, Woodstock, and Montclair. The film is set to hit US theaters in February 2025, just after the Oscar nominations (on January 17th), submitted by Norway for this year. If you're in NYC, you can catch it during its one week awards run later November. It "sheds light on a complex theme from constantly new perspectives, surprising and touching its audience with creative portrayals of the main characters’ emotional journeys." Elisabeth is summoned to a parent-teacher meeting on short notice. Her son is accused of something, but what that "something" is, remains unclear. Soon, the principal, nurse, and more parents join a meeting that quickly spirals out of control. The film stars Renate Reinsve, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Endre Hellestveit, Øystein Røger, & Vera Veljovic. Sounds similar to Germany's The Teachers' Lounge. If anyone is intrigued keep an eye out.
Here's the first teaser trailer for Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel's film Armand, direct from IFC's YouTube:

When defamed actress Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours, she's presented with scathing allegations that trigger a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty. As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness and obsession prevail. Armand is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, now making his feature directorial debut after directing a few other short films previously. It's produced by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar. This first premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Un Certain Regard section. The film opened first in Norway back in September this year. IFC Films will debut Tøndel's Armand film in select US theaters starting February 7th, 2025 early next year. It will also have an awards run in NYC only starting November 29th, 2024 this fall for just one week. Anyone interested in this one?

Renate Reinsve (Norwegian pronunciation: [rɛˈnɑ̀ːtə ˈræ̀ɪnˌsveː]; born 24 November 1987) is a Norwegian actress. She made her film debut in Oslo, August 31st (2011). In 2021, she had her breakout role in the critically acclaimed drama The Worst Person in the World (2021), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress[1][2] and received a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She has since starred in the American legal thriller series Presumed Innocent and drama film A Different Man (both 2024).
Early life
Born in Solbergelva in 1987 and educated at Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, Reinsve then joined the Trøndelag Teater.[3]
After being expelled from school at 16, Reinsve left Norway for Scotland and stayed in a hostel in Edinburgh. Running out of money, she was given a job in the bar of the hostel by the manager as he "felt sorry for [her]".[4]
Career
Reinsve in 2022
In 2014, she received the Hedda Award for her role in Besøk av gammel dame, an adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play Der Besuch der alten Dame. Since 2016, she has been contracted to Det Norske Teatret.[3] Her films include Oslo, August 31st (2011), The Orheim Company (2012), and Welcome to Norway (2016).[3] On television, she has been a main character in Nesten voksen[5] and side character in Hvite gutter.[6]
In 2021, Reinsve played the principal character Julie in Joachim Trier's romantic comedy-drama The Worst Person in the World, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim.[7][8][9][10] On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Reinsve mentioned that she was considering quitting acting the day before she was offered the role of Julie, and had considered carpentry as a backup plan to acting.[11] Trier had written the part of Julie specifically for her.[12] Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised the film giving it a five star review declaring, "Renate Reinsve is the actor who takes on this role and she takes off like a rocket, deserving star status to rival Lily James or Alicia Vikander for her tremendously mature, sensitive and sympathetic performance."[13] For her performance she received numerous accolades including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.[14]
Reinsve at the 2024 Berlinale
Reinsve acted in two films which competed at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, the first being Aaron Schimberg's psychological drama A Different Man co-starring opposite Sebastian Stan and the second being Piero Messina's science-fiction romance Another End with Gael Garcia Bernal.[15][16] Reinsve acted in the film Armand directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel which premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.[17] The film is described as "A story about boundaries - not mainly between the kids, but between the adults involved. Who decides where to set them? What is an assault, what is play, what is consent and what is privacy?".[18] Also in 2024 she played a lover and victim in the Apple TV+ legal thriller series Presumed Innocent acting opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. The series was based on the 1987 novel of the same name.[19]
In 2023, it was announced that Reinsve would reunite with Joachim Trier for the family drama film Sentimental Value.[20] Filming commenced in August 2024.[21]

Renate Reinsve‘s cinematic reign is here.
The “Worst Person in the World” Cannes Best Actress winner leads Norwegian thriller “Armand,” which will be released in theaters after Reinsve already made her American debut with “A Different Man.”
For “Armand,” Reinsve stars as defamed actress Elisabeth, who is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours after her six-year-old son allegedly started a fight with his cousin on elementary school property. As the official synopsis teases, while Elisabeth is “presented with scathing allegations, a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty is triggered … As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness, and obsession prevail.”

Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, makes his feature directorial debut with “Armand.” Tøndel and Reinsve previously collaborated on a 2016 short film, with Tøndel telling IndieWire that even at the time, it was “obvious we were going to make something bigger one day.”
“Armand” has become an acclaimed festival favorite since debuting at Cannes.
IndieWire Deputy Editor of Film Ryan Lattanzio wrote in the review for the feature that Reinsve’s star-making turn as Elisabeth is at times even reminiscent of Isabelle Adjani’s iconic “Possession” performance.
“Even as Ullmann Tøndel’s two-hour movie grows a bit too winding and weird for its short film-scale conceit, Reinsve grounds the film’s more experimental, almost stagelike leanings in a constant state of heightened emotion that will make you love her even more than in ‘Worst Person’ — and, even better, will make you scared of her,” Lattanzio wrote. “As much as Reinsve proved herself the ideal vessel to portray millennial angst and ennui in ‘The Worst Person in the World,’ here she establishes herself as an ultimate portrayer of women on the edge and admiring the view before completely toppling over it. It’s thrilling to watch her free-fall from the hands of a director impressively carrying his family’s legacy with a vivid, creepy, and uncomfortably funny debut that burrows into the mind.”

“Armand” premieres in New York starting November 29 for an awards-qualifying theatrical run. The film will have an official limited release on February 7, 2025, followed by a wide theatrical release February 14, 2025. Check out the teaser trailer below.
With 2024 almost over, all eyes are on the imminent awards season. Who and what will get nominated at this year’s Oscars and Golden Globes? In the case of the Academy’s Best International Feature Film, it’s a tight race, even with an apparent frontrunner in Jacques Audriard‘s “Emilia Peréz.” That begs the question: will any other 2024 Cannes Film Festival films get a BIIF nod?

Payal Kapadia‘s “All We Imagine As Light” shockingly didn’t get entered for consideration, but maybe that allows Halfdan Ullman Tøndel‘s Camera d’Or-winner “Armand” to sneak in. Starring “The Worst Person In The World” and “A Different Man” actress Renate Reinsve, Tøndel’s feature film debut follows a disgraced actress thrust in the middle of a school fight between two six-year-old boys.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Armand,” courtesy of IFC Films:
When defamed actress Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours, she is presented with scathing allegations that trigger a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty. As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness and obsession prevail.
Along with Reinsve, “Armand” also stars Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Endre Hellestveit, Øystein Røger, and Vera Veljovic.
Along with directing, Tøndel also writes the script for “Armand.” Andrea Berentsen Ottmar produces the film.
As noted earlier, “Armand” won the Camera d’Or at Cannes this year, awarded by the festival jury to what they consider the best first feature film. That accolade should help Tøndel’s film’s consideration by the Academy, although “Armand” will have to be the likes of “I’m Still Here,” “Kneecap” and others for the nod.
But based on their theatrical rollout, IFC Films looks confident in Tøndel’s chances to secure a nomination. “Armand” gets a qualifying theatrical run in NYC on November 29 before an official limited theatrical release next year on February 7, 2025. The film then opens everywhere on February 14, 2025.
Watch a trailer for “Armand” below.
There’s one very good scene in “Armand,” the first movie written and directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, who is the grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullmann. We’re inside a primary school in Norway. Elisabeth, the mother of a student, has been summoned to the school to appear before a panel of teachers. She’s informed, in dribs and drabs, that her six-year-old son, Armand (we never see him — or any other child, which is odd, since the whole film is about children), may have sexually abused one of his classmates. Since Elisabeth believes that she has a well-adjusted son, and that a six-year-old can’t be guilty of abuse in any predatory way, she fixes her interrogators with a look of skeptical contempt. And after she’s been grilled about a series of what strike her as trivial micro transgressions, she starts to laugh. In fact, she can’t stop laughing.

Denis Villeneuve Says 'Star Wars' Got 'Derailed' by 'Return of the Jedi' and 'There's No More Surprises' in the Franchise: 'I'm Not Dreaming' of Directing One
Elisabeth is played by Renate Reinsve, who reached a new peak of prominence with her performance in Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World.” The laughing jag she subjects us to — it lasts about five minutes — is a bravura piece of acting. She keeps laughing, and stopping, and laughing again, as if it were busting out of her and she couldn’t control it. Watching this, I began to think that laughing, for an actor, must be even harder than crying. How can you make it look spontaneous? For minutes at a time?
Popular on Variety
But the power of Reinsve’s performance is about where the laughter comes from. It’s bitter and almost sarcastic laughter, with an undercurrent of are-you-shitting-me? disbelief. She’s not just laughing at the idiocy of the questions she’s been asked. She’s laughing at the very idea that she lives in a society that has decided to subject behavior to this degree of control. That’s why her laughter won’t stop. The revelation — the utter horror — that’s driving her giggle fit keeps hitting her, at deeper and deeper levels. Reinsve, unlike the film’s director, has no famous filmmaking legacy, but what she does in this scene made me think of the great Liv Ullmann.
The rest of the film made me think that coherence — of story, theme, vision — may be a fading value.
“Armand” has an interesting premise (a parent being grilled about her son’s behavior as a vehicle for an exploration of social values). But the movie, while elegantly photographed, is mostly a shambles. It keeps throwing things at you in an oblique and random way, and it’s constructed like a puzzle with no solution. Ingmar Bergman became the 20th-century icon of egghead cinema, yet Bergman, for all the loftiness of his reach, wrote dialogue that could suck the audience in like a whirlpool. Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, on the other hand, comes up with “conversation” so terse and elliptical that it sounds like the coded staccato of late-period David Mamet as written by someone who was multitasking.
Ullmann Tøndel doesn’t know how to follow a scene through. Time and again, he leaves us hanging, and most of what happens is flagrantly unbelievable. Why does the panel questioning Elisabeth do it in a classroom rather than an office? Given the seriousness of what may have happened, why don’t they simply tell her what the accusation is instead of dithering around it for 45 minutes? The person overseeing the panel is an inexperienced young teacher, Sunna (Thea Lambrechts Vaulen), who’s in way over her head. But if one of the film’s essential points is that Norwegian culture has become fanatical in its caution, then why would she be put in charge? As details of the incident come to light, it emerges that Armand’s accuser, a 6-year-old named Jon, claims that he was raped. But as Elisabeth points out, this seems like highly unlikely behavior — or language — for a 6-year-old.
As if the situation weren’t loaded enough, Ullmann Tøndel piles on connections and layers of trauma among the characters. Elisabeth and Sarah, the mother of Jon, are sisters-in-law. (Yet we somehow aren’t told this for a long time.) Thomas, the man connecting them, was Sarah’s brother and Elisabeth’s husband; he committed suicide. (Sarah blames Elisabeth.) The fact that there is so much talk about people we never meet is frustrating. And the way that old photographs of several of the characters, taken back when they were students at the school, are displayed in the hallway lends moments of the movie a spooky but weirdly gratuitous “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” vibe. Even a recurring bloody nose is made to seem sinister. Late in the film, there are a couple of showpiece sequences that leave dialogue aside: a sinewy dance performed by Elisabeth, and an expressionistic group body grope. Why are these scenes there? Beats me.
Ullmann Tøndel films the school with a sinister gloss that turns the hallways into a maze, and we hang in there, hoping we can figure out what’s going on. I could gas on about “Armand’s” pesky contrivances, but instead I’ll simply ask a question that critics probably don’t ask often enough: Who is this movie for? Who is going to see it? Who, outside of a film festival, is going to be eager to cut through its thicket of incoherence? Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel has some talent (he staged that laughing-jag scene), but if Ingmar Bergman were staring down from art-house heaven, I think he would say to his grandson, “Please do a rewrite.”
