The Bible outlines specific guidelines regarding tithing, offerings, and first fruits, each serving different purposes in demonstrating faith and gratitude towards God. Tithing, which means giving a tenth of one's income or produce, is introduced in the Old Testament as a mandatory act of worship. Leviticus 27:30 states that a "tithe of everything from the land" belongs to the Lord, emphasizing its holiness. Offerings, on the other hand, are voluntary gifts beyond the tithe, often given in thanksgiving or for specific causes like the support of the poor or the maintenance of religious structures. First fruits represent giving the initial or best part of one's harvest or income to God, symbolizing the acknowledgment that all provisions come from Him. Regarding the love of money, the Bible provides a clear warning against its dangers. In 1 Timothy 6:10, it is stated that "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil," highlighting how an obsession with wealth can lead individuals astray from faith and into many troubles. Jesus also addresses this in Matthew 6:24, where He teaches that one cannot serve both God and money, indicating a fundamental choice between spiritual devotion and material accumulation. This teaching underscores that giving through tithes, offerings, and first fruits is not only about financial support but also about heart orientation—prioritizing spiritual wealth over material gain. These practices are meant to cultivate generosity, trust in divine provision, and a detachment from the corrupting influence of money.
