Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Twenty Nine.

The Mist of Death.

That morning, an adventure as brief as it was strange happened to the son of Crao.
It began with a storm of unprecedented violence.
Rahan is probably not the only one to take refuge there to escape the "wrath of heaven"!

Calm, "Four-hands", calm!

He had barely seen the skeletons that lay here and there when the big gorilla attacked.
Rahan does not want to fight you "Four-hands"! But he will not let you break his skull!

Page Two.

The long, gnarled branch hummed and he had to back away from the great ape's attack.
Ger! Grargh!

He backed up again and again. Until the moment when.
Oh!
The thick fog covering the ground reached his knees.

You have a very curious Den, "Four-hands"!
Growling with fury, the gorilla had just jumped.

The son of Crao narrowly avoided the terrible windmill and.
Ha-ha-ha! Rahan thought the “Four hands” was more agile!

What. What is going on, "Four-Hands"! Are you giving up the fight!?
The great ape staggered toward the entrance of the cave.
But he did not reach the threshold.

Carried away by his momentum, the gorilla had stumbled and.
Falling into the "Fog," he struggled there for a brief moment.

Page Three.

Dead! He is Dead!
Though Rahan did not hit him! He fell in that “Fog”! And he died!

The son of Crao was terrified.
He could not know that this heavy layer of "Fog" Which stagnated in this cavern was in fact a deadly gas.

He had not recovered from his shock when a second gorilla emerged from the shadows!

This one was more agile and more powerful than his fellow.
And Rahan did not have time to escape him!
Grappled, he was carried on to a narrow ledge which overhung the gas sheet.

Which stretched out like a ghostly lake under the unreal light that fell from the vault.
You should never have violated our territory, you fiery-haired stranger!

The man who emerged from the darkness was armed with several spears.
Those who venture into our cavern never come out! We deliver them to the "Mist of Death"!

Page Four.

But Rahan does not want to violate your territory!
He was only looking for a refuge from the "Wrath of Heaven"!
You lie! All men lie! Always! All men are monsters!

Yet you yourself are a "Man”! You should love yours and.
Shut up! Only the "Four-Hands" are my brothers.

Since the day my clan abandoned me as a child, I hate "Men"! I curse them! I kill them!
And I only felt happy with the "Four-Hands" who took me in and with whom I have always lived!

You will know the fate of all those who venture into our cave! Khar-ta, obey Kabark!

The strange hermit was not in his right mind.
The son of Crao clung desperately to the gorilla who was pushing him towards the void, towards the "Mist of Death"!

Page Five.

They fell together into the layer of heavy gas!
Oh!

What! What?
The mist only reached mid-thigh and Rahan felt no discomfort.

Ha-ha-ha! It is just a respite, Rahan!
The "Mist" Is only deadly when it enters through the nose! Khar-ta will take care of you!

An agonizing hand-to-hand fight began as Rahan knew that if he stumbled and fell into this "Mist", he was lost!
Greek! Oh!

He just had time to block his nostrils! The gorilla, with an implacable hold, kept his head in the deadly gas!
Rahan has only one chance left to escape the "shadow realm."

This one! The son of Crao could have killed. He contented himself with lacerating the hairy thigh he glimpsed.

The pain made Khar-ta let go and he took a step back. Back, "Four-Hands"! Back!
Do not make Rahan take your life.
Page Six.

Oh! Zlap!
Rahan had just been disarmed! The ivory knife ricocheted on the rock, and disappeared in the blanket of gas.

Ha-ha-ha! You are at the mercy of Kar-ta "Fire-Hair"!
You are going to. Heh. Uh! Uh!
Kabark the hermit had turned pale as the wounded gorilla was swaying.

Catch that vine, Khar-ta! Quickly! Quickly! Ooh. Khar-ta! Khar-ta!
The fearsome monkey had just collapsed in the "Mist of Death"! It was too late.

As if seized with madness, the hermit rushed to the bottom of the cavern.
He remained there, prostrate, forgetting the son of the fierce ages!

Who, feeling his way along the ground, was searching for his ivory knife. For a moment, he felt the weapon under his foot.

But he could not grasp it because the "Death-gas" was rising, rising, reaching his torso.
Luckily, Kabark let this vine hang!

Page Seven.

A moment later he hoisted himself onto the ledge.
Rahan must get his knife back! He must! He must!

With the branch abandoned by the gorilla, he searched for his weapon again under the "Death Mist."
It is here! But it is impossible to get it back!

Ten times, he brought the ivory knife closer.
Ten times, it slipped between the branch and the rock, and fell back!
Suddenly the hermit came out of his prostration.
All "Men" are monsters and you are the worst of them!
By your fault, the mist of death killed Ki-ba and Khar-ta!

I will send you myself to the "Shadow Kingdom"!
The spear had been thrown with more violence than skill.
Its flint tip, breaking against the rock, shattered the end of the bamboo pole!

Page Eight.

Oh! Rahan knows how to recover his knife!

This split bamboo reminded him of how by chance, one day.

He had discovered the three-pointed arrow.

How could the "Bamboo Fingers" close on the knife!? How?!
Oh, Rahan knows!

The imagination of the son of Crao was limitless. And.

A moment later he was probing the "Mist of Death" with his curious "Harpoon."
The vine was tied to a little cleat that kept the "bamboo fingers" apart.

When he "felt" the weapon, he removed that catch.
And the bamboo blades closed on the weapon like a clamp!

Ra-ha-ha!
The ivory knife was, with its collar of claws, his only possession.
That was why his clamor of victory thundered!
Page Nine.

Which was drowned out by the screams of the hermit who rushed to the ledge!
Death is waiting for you! Death is coming! All men must die!

Your hatred of "Men" is stupid, Kabak! Rahan knows that you were once abandoned by yours!

But it is unfair to blame all "Men" for a fault committed by a few! Throw away your weapon, like Rahan!

You will die!
The son of Crao could not convince this unfortunate man, who was blinded by rage and hatred.
He could only avoid the terrible blow of the lance.

Argh!

Kabarak. Rahan is here.
Rahan had grabbed Kabark's skin cape in mid-air.
He would have liked to save and convince this man. But.

Page Ten.

It was too late. The cloak had suddenly torn!
The hermit disappeared into the mist of death, whose level was dropping again.

He reappeared for a moment, staggering and suffocating. But almost joyful!
Kabark will join you Ki-Ba and Khar-Ta. Kabark is coming.

The cavern grew silent again.
A ray of sunlight now shimmered across the surface of the "death-mist."
Did Rahan experience all this? Or did he have a nightmare!?

No, the knife still pinched by the "bamboo fingers" proved to him that he had not dreamed.
As did the returning sun prove to him!

The son of Crao set off again, obeying his destiny.
If Rahan had not wanted to protect himself from the "Wrath-of-Heaven" he would never have experienced this!

It was in fact only because he had taken shelter from a storm that he had occasioned this strange adventure.
But should we be surprised? The world was so full of strange things, in those wild times!
