Humans are extremely crafty beings. They are capable of pushing their limits and bending time and space in order to survive. Alright, they might not actually bend them, but they were able to create origami, and that is close enough.

In the era of modern technology it’s quite hard to imagine someone having a hobby other than on a computer or an electronic device, but luckily, that still is the case. Having a hobby can keep you relaxed and help you wind down after a tiresome day at work. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it makes you happy.

One of the oldest hobbies in the world is making origami. It comes from two japanese words, ori and kami, which mean folding paper. This basically means that origami is the art of folding paper. It is widely perceived as a japanese form of art, but origami has been used in many other cultures as well. It basically revolves around the art of folding square pieces of decorative paper to create complex three dimensional figurines. The most famous origami figure is the Japanese paper crane. There is a legend behind this figure also called the orizuru in japanese. It is widely believed that the wings of the crane are responsible for taking the souls of the deceased up to heaven. This is why they are used so much in funeral ceremonies. Another belief is that if you want your wish to be fulfilled you would have to make a thousand paper cranes.

There are also a lot of techniques when it comes to creating origami. Some might say that the only technique that should be practiced is the one where you only fold the paper and rely on the paper’s sharp edges as guides. But there are many other ways to create this piece of art. You can cut the paper if needed, which is more common with Chinese type of origami, you can measure out and draw with pencil on the paper for better precision and you can also wet the paper in order to do more curvy origami where the round shape stays intact after it’s been dried, some might even use glue to help the figure retain its shape, but this sort of practice is usually discouraged. The science behind the folding of paper has been studied by many folders and the mathematics helped in creating even more complex folds since the 1980s onwards.

In this footage we can see a icosahedron origami tutorial. It might look a bit too complex, but it is actually quite easy to do. The only thing you need to learn how to do is the building block, and afterwards everything else is just assembling. Have a go at it, you won’t regret it!
