The writers of the series, Harald Rosenlow Eeg & Lars Gudmestad, had this to say about the series, "It's been exciting for us to use the disaster genre in a TV series format where we can get even closer to the characters while telling the story on a massive scale. The series shows ordinary people's limits being tested in the event of a disaster and how they push themself to overcome fears. La Palma also pushes the boundaries of what's possible to achieve with visual effects in a Norwegian TV series. We hope people see that we have put our heart and soul into creating something entertaining and spectacular."

The series in particular follows the story of a Norwegian family vacationing in La Palma until a young researcher finds out that the island is going to be hit with a great disaster.

Thea Sofie Loch Næss (born 26 November 1996, Kristiansand) is a Norwegian actress.

Biography
She started acting at the age of 8. She played a leading role in Eirik Svensson’s coming-of-age film 'One Night in Oslo' in 2013, which premiered in April 2014. In 2014 Næss was studying drama at the Hartvig Nissens school in Oslo.[1] She played the role of Thea in Dryads in 2015. She played the role of the king's daughter Christina of Norway in The Last King which premiered in 2016.[2] In 2016 she was cast in a pilot for a new HBO series (Mogadishu, Minnesota) that ultimately wasn't picked up.[3][4] In 2018 she took the role of villain Skade in the third series of The Last Kingdom on Netflix,[5] and played Bergliot in Episode Six of Saving the Human Race on CW Seed.[6]

Netflix gave a sneak peek at its 2025 line-up of non-English programming yesterday with shows such as The Leopard (Italy), Last Samurai Standing (Japan), The Empress S2 (Germany), El Refugio Atómico (Spain), Senna (Brazil), Alice in Borderland S3 (Japan), and even this year’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (Colombia).

“People like the authenticity of local stories,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said.

“When you try to make something that appeals to everyone, you just end up making something that appeals to no one.” It’s why Bajaria encourages her teams to be ambitious and support the vision of creators with the “goal to make shows and films that resonate in their home country first.”
