Reno police release bodycam of incidents of a resisting suspect before the fatal shooting

The Reno Police Department is providing new information about an officer involved shooting on W 4th Street from November.

RPD says that on Nov. 18, just before 1:40 a.m., an officer with RPD was conducting a proactive patrol when he saw 25-year-old Kristopher Gari at 1010 W. 4th Street.

Gari was wanted on charges of resisting a public officer, eluding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations stemming from incidents two days prior. Police say Gari also had a separate warrant for his arrest.

The first incident occurred the previous Saturday, Nov. 16. Just before 11:00 p.m., officers with the Reno Police Department conducted a traffic stop on an unlicensed car on Sutro. Police say Gari was the driver, and that he had a revoked driver’s license in addition to the warrant. As police attempted to detain Gari, he resisted arrest and fled from officers in his car.

Officers were then unable to locate Gari or the vehicle.

In the second incident, which occurred the next day, Sunday, Nov. 17 at around 7:30 a.m., officers responded to Twin Lakes Drive for a suspicious car parked on private property. When officers arrived, they identified the car as the one from Saturday’s incident involving Gari.

Gari then attempted to return to his car, where officers attempted a traffic stop before Gari fled from the stop, hitting several patrol cars while fleeing. Police were unable to locate Gari.

Finally, on the day of the shooting, police located Gari’s car with him in the driver’s seat during their patrol. The officer attempted to take Gari into custody and entered his car in an attempt to do so.

While in the car, a fight occurred between Gari and the officer. During the fight, Gari ignored the officer’s commands and drove off with the officer trapped inside the car, ultimately crashing the car with himself and the officer inside. The officer continued to attempt to detain him, but Gari continued to resist while trying to get the car started again.

After restarting the car, Gari then began driving on the wrong side of the roadway, causing the officer to draw his gun in an attempt to force Gari to stop. Rather than stopping, Gari grabbed the officer’s gun before the officer fired it.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but Gari was pronounced dead at the scene.
