Syria's Transitional Government Pledges Stability After Assad

Syria's new transitional government, led by Mohammed al-Bashir, has vowed to bring stability and calm following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad. Bashir, previously head of the rebel administration in northwestern Syria, was appointed by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies to govern until March 2025.

Bashir chaired a meeting in Damascus to discuss the transfer of power with Assad’s former ministers. Speaking to Al Jazeera, he emphasized restarting institutions to serve all Syrians. Rebel forces have also gained control of key areas, including Deir al-Zour and Aleppo, where public services are being restored.

UN envoy Geir Pedersen called for inclusivity in the transition process to avoid further conflict, while U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged respect for human rights and minority protections as conditions for international recognition.

HTS, previously designated a terrorist organization, has signaled a shift toward unity and governance, though its past affiliations remain a challenge for international diplomacy.

Life in Damascus is gradually normalizing, with citizens expressing hope for peace and justice under the new administration.
