No need to look under the hood. We already have a sense of what’s going on here.

TVLine’s #2025FirstLook series is, ahem, Shifting Gears, offering an exclusive sneak peek at Seann William Scott‘s character ahead of the ABC sitcom’s Jan. 8 premiere.

The multi-camera comedy marks Tim Allen‘s network homecoming. The half-hour vehicle casts the Home Improvement and Last Man Standing vet as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop,” while Kat Dennings (2 Broke Girls) plays Riley, Matt’s estranged daughter who returns home with her two kids.

Scott (of American Pie fame) co-stars as Gabriel, a family friend who works at the shop with Matt — and the following photo suggests that sparks may fly between the grease monkey and the single mother.

The gig marks Scott’s first multi-cam, following previous stints on Fox’s single-camera comedy Welcome to Flatch and action series Lethal Weapon. He’s best known to audiences for his breakout role as Steve Stifler in the American Pie film franchise.

Joining Scott, Dennings and Allen are Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (NCIS: New Orleans) as Stitch, a former Marine and fellow mechanic, while Maxwell Simkins (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) and newcomer Barrett Margolis co-star as Dennings’ TV kids, Carter and Georgia.

As previously reported, Michelle Nader, who served as showrunner on Dennings’ last two shows — CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and Hulu’s Dollface — will serve in that same capacity on Shifting Gears. Season 1 premieres Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at 8/7c, where it will lead into the midseason return of Abbott Elementary (now airing at 8:30 pm; see ABC’s full winter schedule here).

In January 2025, another comedy will join Abbott Elementary when Shifting Gears premieres on ABC on Wednesday, January 8. The series stars 2 Broke Girls' Kat Dennings and Last Man Standing's Tim Allen. In Shifting Gears, Allen stars as "Matt, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins." ABC released a trailer that finds Riley moving in with her father, but their shared past and the unfolding present cause comic conflict.

The video below begins with Riley's arrival at her dad's place. She drives a red GTO that Matt recognizes instantly. He claims it was stolen fifteen years prior. "There's the thief," he says as Riley hops out. Riley is accompanied by Matt's grandchildren, Carter (Maxwell Simkins) and Georgia (Barrett Margolis). "I'm crawling home because I'm broke," Riley reveals why she visits and stays. She needs a place to stay before she figures out what to do. The past is not behind them as they rehash memories from Riley's teenage years, when she flipped her dad off. "I was 18. The double bird is how I ended all our conversations," she says.

Who Is Behind 'Shifting Gears?'

Allen is best known for his work on projects like Home Improvement, Toy Story, and, recently, The Santa Clauses. Shifting Gears marks his return to ABC after the network canceled Last Man Standing, forcing the show to move to Fox. Around the same time in 2011, Dennings starred in 2 Broke Girls on CBS as Max for seven seasons. Multi-camera sitcoms are making a comeback, and Shifting Gears is the first time both actors have worked in this format in a while. Allen serves as an executive producer, while Dennings is a producer on the show.

The pilot episode was directed by John Pasquin, who also serves as executive producer alongside Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, and John Amodeo. Shifting Gears premieres on ABC on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET. Later, the much anticipated Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover premieres as the shows settle on this schedule for the rest of the season. Other ABC shows like The Rookie Season 7, Will Trent Season 3, and The Conners' final season also got premiere dates and time slots.

Tune in to ABC on Wednesday from 8 P.M. for the comedy hour. In the meantime, stream Last Man Standing on Hulu.

Tim Allen
The first official trailer for ABC's Shifting Gears previews Tim Allen's newest family sitcom. The multi-cam comedy stars Allen as Matt, a widowed, stubborn owner of a classic car restoration shop whose life is upended when his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her two kids move in with him. Shifting Gears' cast also includes American Pie's Seann William Scott, Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. The sitcom will premiere on January 8, 2025, at 8/7c on ABC before streaming the next day on Hulu.

Today, ABC dropped the first official trailer for Shifting Gears. In the trailer, Matt’s old-school values collide with Riley’s modern parenting style with lighthearted friction. Dennings, known for her comedic roles in 2 Broke Girls and Dollface, shines alongside Allen as the two display a mix of heartfelt moments and laugh-out-loud comedy in the working-class suburbs of Detroit. Watch the trailer below:

What Shifting Gears' New Trailer Means
A Glimpse At ABC’s Next Family Sitcom Hit

The release of Shifting Gears' official trailer means ABC is preparing for the family sitcom's premiere next month. As a comedy that balances generational clashes with family reconciliation, Shifting Gears seems like a promising new addition to ABC's family show lineup. Allen’s character, Matt, grapples with the sudden responsibilities of fatherhood and being a grandparent after years of living alone. Dennings’ Riley brings a fresh dynamic to the scene as she navigates rebuilding her relationship with her father as a young parent of two kids and her history as a misbehaving teen.

The trailer teases plenty of comedic moments, from Matt playing video games with his new grandkids to Riley’s witty comebacks and attempts at family bonding. Shifting Gears' premise signals a thematic return to Allen’s roots in family-driven television, such as Last Man Standing and Home Improvement. With Allen and Dennings leading the charge, supported by a strong ensemble and new guest stars, Shifting Gears aims to deliver a relatable story for multi-generational families.

Tim Allen's Shifting Gears unveils a first look at the highly anticipated new comedy series as it gears up for a 2025 premiere on ABC. The sitcom centers around Matt (Allen), a widowed owner of a car restoration shop, and his attempts at reconnecting with his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings), who, along with her two teenage children, moves into Matt’s home. Shifting Gears marks Allen’s return to ABC after the long-running success of Last Man Standing.

Shifting Gears has now revealed its first image (via TVLine), showcasing Allen standing side-by-side with co-star Dennings, both wearing a slight smile. The series will premiere on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 8/7c. Shifting Gears' cast is rounded out by Seann William Scott (American Pie) as Gabriel, a family friend who works at the shop, and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (NCIS: New Orleans) as Stitch, a former Marine mechanic. Michelle Nader, a frequent collaborator of Dennings' from 2 Broke Girls and Dollface, is showrunner. Check out the image below:

What The First Look Image Means For Shifting Gears
How Tim Allen's New Series Previews Both Heart And Humor

The image from Shifting Gears offers a glimpse into the tone and style of Allen’s latest project, which builds on his reputation for playing a stubborn, blue-collar everyman with a dry sense of humor. Known for his paternal roles in the sitcoms Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, Allen’s character Matt seems poised to follow a familiar formula, navigating the ups and downs of family life with reluctant affection and boyish charm. This initial image hints at the close and comedic dynamic likely to play out between Allen and Dennings, as the father-daughter duo navigate re-establishing themselves as a family unit.

The sitcom appears to capture Allen’s comedic strengths while allowing Dennings, also known for her dry wit and charm, to add her own unique flair that she's similarly brought to the MCU as Darcy Lewis. With a supporting cast that brings a range of comedic and dramatic experience, Shifting Gears could strike a balance between the nostalgia of Allen's older sitcom and a fresh appeal for new audiences.

Our Take On The First Look Image Of Shifting Gears
Allen And Dennings Show Promise As A Comedic Duo
tim allen as mike baxter and patricia richardson as helen potts in last man standing
The first look at Shifting Gears suggests Allen is leaning into what he does best: portraying relatable, down-to-earth characters in family-driven stories. The on-screen pairing with Dennings promises a new dynamic that blends Allen's established comedic style with Dennings' sharp, modern tongue. This mix of old-school charm and fresh talent could make Shifting Gears a worthwhile addition to Allen's portfolio, bringing both humor and heart to ABC’s primetime lineup.

Kat Dennings and Tim Allen are moving in together — kind of.

The new ABC sitcom Shifting Gears stars Dennings and Allen as they play a widowed father Matt and his estranged daughter Riley who find themselves living together and working to repair their relationship.

PEOPLE’s exclusive first look shows the dynamic between the two as they navigate life under one roof, as Riley and her kids move back home.

“Is that my GTO? I built that 15 years ago and somebody stole it,” the trailer begins, showing Matt, an owner of a classic car repair shop, watching Riley drive in.

“Hi, dad,” she says before he exclaims, “And there’s the thief!”

Words then flash across the screen reading: “Coming home is a bumpy road.”

“I'm crawling home because I’m broke,” Riley explains. “I need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like.”

“So a couple of days!” Matt quips, promoting laughter from the studio audience.

Viewers then get a peak into the father-daughter dynamic, with Matt recalling, “I asked if you locked that back door, you looked back at me and you gave me a double bird.”

“I was 18, the double bird is how I ended all of our conversations,” Riley jokes before the preview comes to an end.

In addition to starring in the sitcom, Allen, 71, serves as executive producer and Dennings, 38, as producer. The series also stars Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

Allen is no stranger to sitcoms. He is well known for his role in the ‘90s hit Home Improvement and, more recently, Last Man Standing, which ended in 2021. He also starred in The Santa Clause movies, which was made into a Disney+ series The Santa Clauses in 2022.

Dennings also made her mark in the sitcom world with CBS' 2 Broke Girls, which aired from 2011-2017.
