In a post to his Truth Social platform, U.S. president-elect Donald Trump doubled down on recent comments calling Canada the “51st state” and referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as its “governor.”

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon,” Trump wrote Tuesday morning, expressing excitement for “spectacular” results of a discussion about tariffs and trade between the U.S. and Canada.

During said dinner, it was reported that Trump first made the joke about Canada becoming a state, directly to Trudeau.

Last month, Trump threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican goods if the countries do not ramp up their border security and work to tackle drug trafficking.
