Asbury Park Burns - 1917

In 1917, a fire consumed 4 city blocks of homes, hotels, and… swimming pool in Asbury Park, NJ. Presumably caused by faulty electric wiring, the blaze was driven by high winds that turned the firefighter’s efforts into ineffective mist. Eventually, the inferno was brought under control by – appropriately enough – a church. The damage was so extensive that local newspapers headlines printed the fire over America’s entry into World War 1.
