Federal Appeals Court Upholds TikTok Ban
A federal appeals court has unanimously upheld a law that could ban TikTok in the United States unless its Chinese parent company ByteDance sells the platform to an American owner. The deadline for this sale is set for January 19, 2025, according to the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
If ByteDance fails to comply with the divestiture requirement, TikTok would become unavailable to its approximately 170 million American users. The court recognized the significant implications of this decision, acknowledging that users would need to seek alternative social media platforms if a ban takes effect.
The ruling represents a critical development in the ongoing debate over TikTok's future in the United States, highlighting growing concerns about foreign ownership of popular social media platforms. The decision maintains pressure on ByteDance to either sell its U.S. operations or face the consequences of a nationwide ban.
