Bridget Jones is in an entirely new stage of her life, with a new love interest and new concerns, in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, the fourth installment of the popular rom-com franchise — and maybe the last? — which released its first trailer today.
Co-starring Leo Woodall, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Emma Thompson, the new film hailing from Universal Pictures, StudioCanal and Miramax is set to stream exclusively in the U.S. on Peacock on February 13. Following Renée Zellweger’s endearing yet perpetually single character of the same name, it’s based on the third installment of the beloved book series from Helen Fielding, who penned the script, with contributions from Abi Morgan and Dan Mazer.

New Bridget Jones Film Is “Very Sad,” Hugh Grant Reveals
The film picks up with Bridget in her early 50s, finding her alone once again. Widowed four years ago, when Mark (Colin Firth) was killed on a humanitarian mission in the Sudan, she’s now a single mother to nine-year-old Billy and four-year-old Mabel, and is stuck in a state of emotional limbo, raising her children with help from her loyal friends and even her former lover, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).
Watch on Deadline
Pressured by her Urban Family —Shazzer, Jude and Tom, her work colleague Miranda, her mother, and her gynecologist Dr. Rawlings (Emma Thompson) — to forge a new path toward life and love, Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she’s soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man (Leo Woodall). Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
In addition to Firth, Grant and Thompson, returning cast members include Sarah Solemani, Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson, James Callis, Gemma Jones, and Jim Broadbent. Other newcomers joining Woodall and Ejiofor include Isla Fisher, Josette Simon, Nico Parker, and Leila Farzad.
Michael Morris (To Leslie) directed the Peacock Original, which has a theatrical air to it, judging by the trailer, and should clean up on streaming. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett produced through Working Title Films. Working Title’s Amelia Granger and Sarah-Jane Wright exec produced alongside Fielding and Zellweger, and Miramax and StudioCanal co-financed the project, with the latter handling distribution in select international territories.
Mad About the Boy comes on the heels of Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) and Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016), which together grossed over $800 million worldwide. Take a look at the the new chapter — which may be Bridget’s “last” on screen, according to the trailer’s messaging — above.

Bridget’s back, and she’s still trying to figure things out.
The first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has been released, and Renée Zellweger’s Bridget is still looking for love as she comes to terms with the tragedy of losing Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Yep, you read that correctly, Darcy is no more and the trailer serves up the bad news straight away.
Still, the only way is up for our Bridget as she gets on with life, and the prospect of not one but two possible romances. There’s the hunky and age-appropriate Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a teacher at Bridget’s children’s school and the wild card of Roxster (Leo Woodall), the youthful bit of rough that should be a red flag.

Paging all singletons and smug-marrieds!
Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is back once again — and now, in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” she’s a widow. Yes, for those who don’t keep up with the novels by Helen Fielding, Mr. Darcy is now dead. It’s been four years, so single mum Bridget is ready for some sex. Ding dong!
Joining the cast of suitors for the fourth go-round are Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall (“One Day”), in addition to a returning Hugh Grant (who didn’t appear in the third installment, 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby”). There’s also at least a cameo appearance by Mark Darcy himself (Colin Firth).
Per a press release: “Bridget is alone once again, widowed four years ago, when Mark was killed on a humanitarian mission in the Sudan. She’s now a single mother to 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel, and is stuck in a state of emotional limbo, raising her children with help from her loyal friends and even her former lover, Daniel Cleaver (Grant). Pressured by her Urban Family — Shazzer, Jude and Tom, her work colleague Miranda, her mother, and her gynecologist Dr. Rawlings (Emma Thompson) — to forge a new path toward life and love, Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she’s soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man (Leo Woodall). Now juggling work, home, and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher (Chiwetel Ejiofor).”

“Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” is written by Helen Fielding, with contributions by Abi Morgan and Dan Mazer. Directed by Michael Morris, it’s produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Jo Wallett.
“Bridget Jones’s Diary,” of course, was an Oscar-nominated smash when it premiered in 2001. The less-beloved sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” also starring Zellweger, Grant, and Firth, hit in 2004. For “Baby,” Patrick Dempsey also appeared as a suitor before Bridget once again finally made it work with her Mr. Darcy.
“Mad About the Boy” will be released in theaters internationally by Universal Pictures and will stream exclusively on Peacock in the U.S. February 13, 2025. Watch the trailer below.

"Bridget goes back to work and even tries out the dating apps, where she’s soon pursued by a dreamy and enthusiastic younger man," reads an official synopsis for the movie. "Now juggling work, home and romance, Bridget grapples with the judgment of the perfect mums at school, worries about Billy as he struggles with the absence of his father, and engages in a series of awkward interactions with her son’s rational-to-a-fault science teacher."
Universal first announced that Zellweger will reprise her titular role as Bridget Jones in a new movie based on Helen Fielding's books back on April 9.

Mad About the Boy marks the series' fourth film. It's adapted from author Fielding's 2013 novel of the same name, with Michael Morris directing. Isla Fisher also joins its cast as a newcomer to the series alongside Ejiofor, 47, and Woodall, 28. Emma Thompson, who cowrote and appeared in 2016's Bridget Jones's Baby, also reprises her role as Doctor Rawlings in the new film.

Grant, 63, told PEOPLE back in April that the new movie is "very moving as well as funny" and noted author Fielding based the story on her own experiences "of bringing up two children by herself after her husband died." "And so Bridget is bringing up two kids and wondering whether she should ever go back to dating," he said. "It's a very good script."
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy begins streaming exclusively on Peacock Feb. 13, 2025.
