Founding
The empire was founded by Babur, a Timurid prince from the Fergana Valley, who conquered the Punjab and unseated the Delhi sultanate.
Expansion
The empire reached its peak under Aurangzeb, controlling most of the Indian subcontinent.
Decline
The empire began to decline in the 18th century, and much of its territory was taken over by the Marathas and the British.
End
The last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah II, was exiled by the British after the Indian Mutiny of 1857–58.
Known for
The Mughals were patrons of art and architecture, and are responsible for some of India's most famous monuments, including the Taj Mahal. They also promoted cultural, artistic, and linguistic exchanges through intermarriage with Hindu royalty and alliances with other peoples.
Emperors
The best-known Mughal emperors are Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, who are sometimes known as the Great Mughals.
Language
The court language of the Mughals was Persian, and the official languages of the empire were Persian and Hindustani.
