Emily Calandrelli, known as the “Space Gal,” is a prominent figure in science communication and aerospace engineering. She holds a degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University and a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Calandrelli has made a career for herself promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education for women and girls. She is best known for hosting the Netflix series “Emily’s Wonder Lab,” which aims to inspire young girls to engage with science through fun experiments.

In addition to her television work, her passion for space exploration culminated in her recent achievement of becoming the 100th woman to travel into space. On November 22, 2024, she participated in a suborbital flight aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, where she experienced weightlessness and witnessed Earth from space—a lifelong dream realized.

Hostile Response to Online Comments

Following her historic flight, Emily Calandrelli received comments online that she assumed were all from men without evidence. A video capturing her awe as she gazed at Earth was criticized for sounding both sexual and hyper-exaggerated. This prompted Blue Origin to remove the original video.

Calandrelli expressed her dismay over these reactions all over social media, and made the rounds on networks such as CNN who were happy to help her play the victim, even after becoming only the 100th woman in space. In her Instagram post, she claimed that being a woman and achieving something monumental often leads to expectations of humiliation from some men online (no examples were given).

Emily Calandrelli is politically far-Left and has made many polarizing controversial comments on her Facebook page that remain up to this day. Among her most controversial comments on social media:
