Wolves are predators from the dog family and live in packs. Wolves are widespread in Europe, large parts of Asia, North America and the Arabian Peninsula. The wolf resembles a large domestic dog. Their size and weight vary greatly due to their large distribution area. Wolves come in many different colours. These beautiful animals eat red deer, but also fish, birds and other small animals. Large prey are usually killed by a bite to the throat and the bite is sustained until the prey is dead. The killed prey is usually dragged to the nearest shelter. The dead prey is usually eaten completely, leaving only the larger bones. Wolves see very well and smell 14 times better than humans. Wolves are thought to hear in the ultrasonic range. Wolves live in many habitats, from the deserts of North America and Central Asia to the Arctic tundra. Most wolves live in grasslands and forests, but also in mountains up to an altitude of 2400 metres above sea level. Wolves have very good social and territorial behaviour. Packs of wolves live in territories, which they defend vehemently against other packs or individual wolves if necessary. Wolves can live up to 13 years in the wild.
