On March 24th, 2023, 14-year-old Tyre Samson tragically lost his life after falling from the Orlando Freefall drop tower at Icon Park. Described as the world's tallest freestanding drop tower, the ride raises passengers 400 feet in the air, tilts them forward, and drops them at speeds reaching 4 G's. During the ride, Tyre slipped through the gap between his seat and the harness, moments after the ride began. A disturbing video captured the incident, showing Tyre falling to his death during the rapid drop.
Tyre weighed 383 pounds, over the ride's 287-pound weight limit, but there were no signs indicating weight restrictions or scales for riders. A forensic investigation revealed that the harness sensor in Tyre’s seat had been manually adjusted, creating a gap that allowed the ride’s safety mechanisms to falsely indicate the ride was safe. The ride proceeded despite the unsafe condition. To make matters worse, the attendant in charge was a trainee with only three days of experience.
Tyre’s family has filed a lawsuit, seeking justice and accountability for the tragedy that claimed the young teen's life. This incident raises serious questions about safety protocols, training, and the responsibility of amusement parks to ensure the safety of all riders.
