Power Over Soaring Electric Bills Susan Martin from Moncton is calling for action from the provincial government regarding the skyrocketing electric bills affecting New Brunswick residents. She found that most of the smart-meter bills she collected showed double the kilowatt usage compared to the same month last year. Martin gathered 45 power bills and noted troubling trends, particularly concerning her own rental property, where energy consumption jumped from 1,700 kilowatts in February last year to over 5,200 this year. As N.B. Power conducts a third-party audit of its billing system, Martin urges immediate intervention to protect vulnerable populations facing high energy costs. Despite N.B. Power's assurances that they see no issues with the bills so far, Martin's findings raise doubts about the accuracy of smart-meter readings. She emphasizes that increases in bills should not simply be attributed to factors like colder weather or inflation but rather to unexplained spikes in consumption. N.B. Power plans to release its audit results in April, while Premier Susan Holt has promised provincewide consultations to address residents' concerns about rising bills.
