Capital Gazette shooter mails card to Virginia newspaper editor

The man who killed five people at the Capital Gazette newspaper offices in Annapolis June 28 may have mailed a card to a newspaper editor in Virginia the same day, law enforcement officials said Friday. Jarrod Ramos is currently charged with five counts of first-degree murder, in a crime police said was targeted. Ramos seemed to have a grudge against the paper and particular staffers who worked there. The editor who received the card, Eric Hartley, used to be an editor at the Capital Gazette. He turned it over to local police unopened. That agency gave the letter to the FBI, who sent it to Anne Arundel County officials to include it in their investigation. Anne Arundel County Police Director of Media Relations Ryan Frashure released the following statement about the letter: For the record I can confirm that yesterday former Capital editor Eric Hartley (now lives in VA) stated that he received a letter postmarked June 28 that he believed was sent from Ramos.  The letter was seized by Norfolk Police Department and turned over to the FBI.  The FBI then turned that letter over to our investigators. Due to the very active and on-going investigation we cannot comment on the contents of the letter.  Our detectives are still attempting to verify if it was sent from Ramos. There is no further information that we can discuss at this time.
