Opposition forces have captured Hama, Syria's fourth-largest city.

Activists report they have taken control of Hama's air base, police headquarters, and prison. Syrian government troops state they have redeployed outside the city.

Opposition forces are gathering troops and equipment as they advance towards Homs, Syria's third-largest city, located 40km (24 miles) south of Hama.

If Homs is captured, it could cut Damascus off from the coastal region, a stronghold of Assad's Alawite sect and home to Russian naval and air bases.
