Thunderbolts* is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics team Thunderbolts. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo. It stars an ensemble cast featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Edward Pierce, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In the film, a group of antiheroes goes on missions for the government.

Marvel Studios began teasing the formation of a Thunderbolts team within the MCU in 2021. The film was revealed to be in development in June 2022, when Schreier and Pearson were attached. The film's main cast members were revealed that September, followed by additional casting through early 2023. Lee joined to rewrite the film's script by March 2023, one of several creatives who returned to work with Schreier from the Netflix series Beef (2023). Production was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, causing some actors to leave the project and be replaced in early 2024, when Calo joined. Filming took place from February to June 2024 at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional filming in Utah.

Thunderbolts* is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 2, 2025, as the final film of Phase Five of the MCU.

Premise
A group of anti-heroes goes on missions for the American government.[1]

Cast
Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova: A member of the Thunderbolts who was trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow.[2]
Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes:
An enhanced super-soldier with a cybernetic arm and the de facto leader of the Thunderbolts.[2][3] Presumed killed in action during World War II, he reemerged in the present day as a brainwashed assassin before his programming was removed.[2] Stan has described Barnes' role within the film as akin to that of Jack Nicholson's character Randle McMurphy in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), an individual coming into a chaotic and degenerate group whose members he finds a way to unite.[4]
David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian:
A member of the Thunderbolts who is the Russian super-soldier counterpart to Captain America and a father-figure to Belova.[2] Harbour said the film further explores the complex relationship between Shostakov and Belova that was introduced in Black Widow (2021). He noted that Belova cannot stand Shostakov, but she needs someone to help her feel complete and Shostakov is able to fill that role.[5]
Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent:
An enhanced super-soldier and member of the Thunderbolts. He is a former decorated Captain of the U.S. Army Rangers who was chosen by the U.S. government to become Steve Rogers's successor as Captain America before receiving an other than honorable discharge.[2]
Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster:
A member of the Thunderbolts with photographic reflexes that allow her to mimic opponents' fighting styles. She was formerly controlled by her father Dreykov to complete missions for the Red Room before being freed by Belova's adoptive sister Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow.[2]
Lewis Pullman as Bob / Sentry[6][7]
Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's assistant[6][8]
Chris Bauer[9]
Wendell Edward Pierce[9]
Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost:
A member of the Thunderbolts who can phase through objects.[2] John-Kamen said the film shows a different side of the character following her introduction in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), with Ghost no longer in a constant state of molecular disequilibrium and able to control her powers with calmness and decisiveness.[10]
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine:
A contessa and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) who works with Belova and Walker.[2][11] Louis-Dreyfus described de Fontaine as someone who is "after power, control, and just generally she wants to kick ass in the Marvel Universe".[12]
Additionally, Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz are expected to reprise their respective roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff from previous MCU media.[13] There are conflicting reports about whether Harrison Ford will appear in the film reprising his role as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from Captain America: Brave New World (2025).[14][15]

Production
Development
During the production of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), director James Gunn expressed interest in a film based on the Marvel Comics team the Thunderbolts. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said this was a possibility based on the success of Guardians of the Galaxy,[16] but Gunn was no longer interested in 2021, after directing the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film The Suicide Squad (2021), because that team from DC Comics is a similar concept to the Thunderbolts.[17] In June 2018, Hannah John-Kamen expressed enthusiasm for reprising her Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) role of Ava Starr / Ghost in a Thunderbolts film considering the comics version of Ghost is a member of the team.[18]

Speculation that a Thunderbolts team would be introduced to the MCU began in mid-2019 following the announcement that Daniel Brühl would appear as Helmut Zemo in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), reprising his role from Captain America: Civil War (2016).[19][20] That series introduced Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and shows her recruiting Wyatt Russell's John Walker / U.S. Agent. De Fontaine is also shown to be working with Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova in the post-credits scene of the film Black Widow (2021). Commentators speculated that she was recruiting a team of villains or anti-heroes like the Thunderbolts,[20][21] and some felt that team could appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Executive producer Nate Moore said the Thunderbolts were never considered for the project because they would "cloud the story" and take away from other aspects of the series. Head writer Malcolm Spellman felt there was "a lot of chatter" around the team's potential introduction to the MCU and stated, "I don't know if fans are crazy or not".[22]

By June 2022, Jake Schreier was attached to direct Thunderbolts,[1][23] from a screenplay by Eric Pearson, with Feige producing. Schreier was hired after a presentation that "blew away" Marvel Studios executives. At that time, the studio had been in contact with actors to discuss their availability to reprise their roles for the film.[1] Commentators suggested that the team could consist of characters such as Zemo, Belova, U.S. Agent, Ghost, Taskmaster, Abomination, Bucky Barnes, or Clint Barton, with de Fontaine or Zemo leading the team.[1][20][21][24][25] Deadline Hollywood also suggested that Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross could be recast for the film following original actor William Hurt's death in March 2022,[1][25] since that character has strong ties to the team in the comics.[1] The film was officially announced in July at San Diego Comic-Con, with a release date of July 26, 2024. It was set to be the last film in Phase Five of the MCU.[26] Scarlett Johansson, who portrayed Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow in the MCU from 2010 to 2021, is credited as an executive producer on the film.[27]

Pre-production

Concept art released at the D23 Expo in September 2022 featuring the main cast in costume: (L to R) Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster
In September 2022, Justin Kroll of Deadline Hollywood described the film as being a spin-off for Belova because she was expected to lead the anti-hero team, with Pugh, Russell, and Brühl believed to be reprising their roles.[28] At the D23 Expo the same month, Pugh, Russell, John-Kamen, and Louis-Dreyfus were confirmed to star, alongside Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, all reprising their roles from previous MCU projects.[2] Harbour said the film would be unique in the MCU, describing the main cast as "a bunch of misfits and outcasts and losers and people who don't really live up to the super in superhero".[29] Pugh said the joy of uniting these characters was that they "don't play well together".[12] She was set to be paid eight figures for Thunderbolts and another MCU film.[30] At the end of the month, Jeff Sneider of Above the Line reported that Harrison Ford was Marvel Studios' top choice to replace Hurt as Ross, and Marvel planned to announce his casting at D23 before Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy asked them not to because she felt it would detract from their promotion of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). Sneider was unsure if Ford had since passed on the role.[31][32] In mid-October, Sneider reported that Ford had been cast as Ross and would first appear in Captain America: Brave New World (2025).[33] The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Ford's casting in Brave New World and Thunderbolts shortly after,[14] however, Variety later reported that Ford's involvement would be limited to Brave New World.[15] Further conflicting reports emerged in July 2024 when Entertainment Weekly's Sydney Bucksbaum and Christian Holub, and Esquire's Josh Rosenberg commented that Feige's remarks at San Diego Comic-Con may have indicated that Ford would not be appearing in Thunderbolts.[34][35]

Louis-Dreyfus stated in January 2023 that filming would begin that June,[36] and Ayo Edebiri joined the cast in an undisclosed role.[37] The next month, Steven Yeun was cast in a significant role with the potential to continue in future MCU films.[38] Yeun worked with Schreier on the Netflix series Beef (2023–present), and the director had the actor in mind when adding the character to the film.[39] The next month, Lee Sung Jin revealed that he had joined the film to rewrite the script at Schreier's request; Lee also collaborated with Schreier on Beef, which Lee created. Lee said there were "a lot of themes and exciting things" about the film that drew him to the project. He was working closely with Schreier on the script and noted that, unlike Beef, Thunderbolts was Schreier's project and had different writing needs to that series given the film's large scope and scale.[40] Sneider reported that Pearson's script focused too much on the Black Widow characters that audiences were already familiar with, and Marvel Studios was looking for the other characters to have a more equitable role so it felt like an ensemble film.[41] Grace Yun was serving as production designer by April after doing so on Beef,[42] and cinematographer Steve Yedlin was working on the film in Atlanta, Georgia, by May.[43][44] Sanja Milkovic Hays served as the costume designer after previously working on Captain Marvel (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).[45]

At the start of May, filming was delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and was planned to resume after the strike concluded.[46] The following month, the Utah Film Commission announced that Thunderbolts was set to film in Emery County and Grand County, Utah, in mid-2023, spending over $4.5 million in the state. Executive producer Brian Chapek said it would be a more grounded film set across the world with several practical locations.[47] In mid-June, the film's release date was pushed back to December 20, 2024.[48] When the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike ended in November 2023, the film's release date was pushed back again, this time to July 25, 2025.[49] At that time, comic book writer Robert Kirkman, a close friend of Yeun's, revealed that Yeun had been cast as Sentry.[50] Russell expressed confidence that the film would be interesting, fun, and not a "straightforward" Marvel film,[51] and said he would begin filming in March or April 2024;[52] in January, Stan said he would begin filming "in a month or so".[53] Also that month, Yeun exited his role due to a scheduling issue caused by the film's delayed production,[54][55][56] but expressed interest in working on a future MCU film.[55] It was initially unclear if Marvel would recast or rethink Yeun's role,[57] but Lewis Pullman was revealed to be the studios' top choice to replace Yeun as Sentry by the end of January,[58][59] and his casting was soon confirmed.[60][8] Additionally, Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz were reported to be reprising their MCU roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff,[13] and Geraldine Viswanathan was cast in the comedic supporting role of de Fontaine's assistant Mel, replacing Edebiri after she left the film due to its delayed schedule.[6][8][60] In February, the film's release date was moved forward to May 2, 2025, swapping places with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.[61] Joanna Calo was rewriting the script later that month. Previous drafts had centered on the titular team going on a mission during which they were intended to die.[62]

Filming
Filming was originally scheduled to begin in mid-June 2023 and last for six months.[46][36][63] It was initially not expected to be impacted by the writers' strike, with Marvel Studios reportedly planning to shoot what they could during principal photography and make any necessary writing adjustments during the film's already scheduled reshoots;[64] however, filming was ultimately delayed by the writers' strike and subsequent SAG-AFTRA strike.[46][49] The original filming schedule overlapped with Stan's work on The Apprentice (2024), for which he gained weight to portray Donald Trump. He had begun the physical transformation needed to portray Barnes when the strikes began and he had to reverse course.[65] Harbour planned to shoot his scenes as Red Guardian concurrently with his scenes as Jim Hopper for the fifth season of Stranger Things (2016-present), also in Atlanta,[66] before that production was also delayed by the writers' strike.[67]

Principal photography began by February 26, 2024,[68] at Trilith Studios and Atlanta Metro Studios in Atlanta,[69][70] under the working title Oops All Berries, which is a reference to a variation of the cereal Cap'n Crunch that only featured the berry-flavored pieces.[47][70] Andrew Droz Palermo serves as cinematographer, after previously working on the Marvel Studios series Moon Knight (2022),[71] with the film being shot for IMAX.[72] In March, Pugh revealed a new logo for the film which styled the title as "Thunderbolts*". Several commentators questioned why there was an asterisk in the logo.[73] The next month, Feige confirmed that Thunderbolts* was the official title and said the use of the asterisk would be explained following the film's release, which was adjusted to May 5, 2025,[74] though this was eventually moved back to May 2, 2025.[75][76] This led to continued speculation as to the purpose of the asterisk in the title.[77][78] Filming occurred in Emery County and Grand County, Utah, from May 29 to June 12, 2024,[79] and was also expected to occur in New York.[80] Louis-Dreyfus, who finished filming her scenes by early June,[81][82] believed Marvel Studios was trying to "go back to their roots" with the film, focusing on "the human story" with multiple stunt sequences and avoiding CGI when possible.[83] Filming concluded in mid-June,[84] with Harbour wrapping his scenes at the end of the month.[85]

Post-production
In September 2024, Chris Bauer and Wendell Edward Pierce were revealed to have been cast in undisclosed roles in the film.[9] Harry Yoon and Angela M. Catanzaro serve as editors on the film. Yoon previously worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Beef.[42][86]

Marketing
After filming had begun in March 2024, Pugh and Marvel Studios released a set video in which she showcased her new Black Widow costume and an updated logo for the film with Schreier.[87][88] Kristen Lopez at TheWrap felt viewers would "start deconstructing the brief images she's shown immediately",[87] while Sabina Graves of Gizmodo felt the video was delightful and a fun tease for a scene featuring Belova. She highlighted Pugh's short hair and her joking with Schreier that they "really shouldn't be showing any of this".[88] Collider's Chris McPherson also discussed Pugh's costume, calling it "very military [and] quite tactical", and noted her teal eyeliner.[89] A behind-the-scenes look was shown at CineEurope in June,[84] while the first footage from the film was shown at San Diego Comic-Con the next month, presented by Schreier and the cast. Harbour dressed as Red Guardian for the panel.[7][75] Following online leaks of the San Diego Comic-Con footage, Marvel released an official look at the Thunderbolts team within their video celebrating the company's 85th anniversary.[90] A teaser trailer was released in September,[27] featuring the song "Where Is My Mind?" by the Pixies.[91]

Release
Thunderbolts* is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 2, 2025,[61][76] in IMAX.[92] It was previously scheduled for July 26, 2024,[26] December 20, 2024,[48] July 25, 2025,[49] and May 5, 2025.[74] It will be the final film of Phase Five of the MCU.[7]

The first trailer for Disney’s Thunderbolts opens to Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a depressed assassin, reuniting with her slob father, Alexei (David Harbour).

She complains her life is empty, despite being busy with dangerous hit jobs. But purpose quickly returns to Yelena’s life as the action-packed teaser has her soon crossing paths with a collection of Marvel’s shadiest characters.

“Everyone here has done bad things … So, someone wants us gone,” Yelena at one point in the trailer tells her fellow antiheroes, including John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) — as they are threatened with elimination after completing earlier jobs for an unknown villain.

Thunderbolts was hit by delays due to the writers and actors strikes last year, and the latest release date is set for May 2, 2025. With production following the Los Angeles labor actions, Geraldine Viswanathan replaced Ayo Edebiri and Top Gun: Maverick actor Pullman replaced Steven Yeun in the superhero pic due to scheduling conflicts.

The Marvel team-up movie also stars Sebastian Stan and David Harbour, with Jake Schreier directing and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing.

Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers.
Marvel released the first trailer for “Thunderbolts*,” opening in theaters on May 2, 2025.

In the upcoming superhero pic, starring “Captain America” mainstay Sebastian Stan and “Black Widow” cast members Florence Pugh and David Harbour, reformed Marvel villains are forced to team up to conduct covert operations on behalf of the U.S. government.

The “Thunderbolts*” crew also includes Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster from “Black Widow”), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from “Ant-Man and the Wasp”), Wyatt Russell (John Walker from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (as mastermind Valentina Allegra de Fontaine). “Top Gun: Maverick” star Lewis Pullman plays a mysterious character named Bob.

Based on Kurt Busiek’s comic series of the same name, “Thunderbolts*” is directed by Jake Schreier, with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers. The screenplay is written by Eric Pearson (“Black Widow,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Transformers One,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”), “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and co-showrunner of “The Bear” Joanna Calo.

Marvel, Thunderbolts
“Thunderbolts*” will feature a less well-known Marvel super-team. Unlike the “Avengers” and “Fantastic Four” franchises, which have enjoyed a steady level of popularity in the comic medium for over five decades, giving them a built-in audience for their film adaptations, “Thunderbolts*,” a more obscure Marvel property, will have to win the affection of its audience to some extent upon its theatrical release. While this is not totally unfamiliar territory for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, having introduced three movie installments of the relatively unpopular “Guardians of the Galaxy” comic series to massive critical acclaim and commercial success in the last decade, it is still a risk that Feige and Marvel are willing to take.

One reason why the risk might be worth taking is the stellar cast attached to the project, which includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lewis Pullman, Olga Kurylenko, and Harrison Ford. Director Jake Scheir and co-writer Lee Sung Jin are coming off massive success after last year’s Emmys, in which they took home multiple prizes for the excellent Netflix series “Beef.” Eric Pearson, whose previous writing credits include “Black Widow,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” is also attached as a writer.

Those who have been following the MCU closely over the past few years will recognize characters like Red Guardian (Harbour), Yelena Belova (Pugh), and Taskmaster (Kurylenko) from “Black Widow.” As well as Bucky Barnes (Stan) from several Marvel movies and U.S. Agent (Russell) from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Feige confirmed from the stage that Pullman will play the character Sentry, often known as Marvel’s version of Superman, i.e., an all-powerful character.

“Thunderbolts*” centers around a group of outcast heroes and supervillains assembled by U.S. espionage chief Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Dreyfus) and under the command of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Ford) as they take on potential adversaries like the mysterious Sentry (Pullman).

Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan and the rest of the “Thunderbolts*” stars are kicking even more ass in a special look at Marvel‘s upcoming film.

The extended trailer debuted at the first-ever Brazil D23 fan event on Saturday. David Harbour, who plays Red Guardian in the film, was there to present the trailer to the audience.

The Thunderbolts are essentially the answer to DC’s Suicide Squad — both are teams of villains and antiheroes forced to undergo dangerous missions for the good of mankind. In addition to Pugh, who reprises her “Black Widow” role of Yelena Belova, the cast includes Harbour, Stan as the Winter Soldier, Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster from “Black Widow”), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from “Ant-Man and the Wasp”), Wyatt Russell (John Walker from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (as mastermind Valentina Allegra de Fontaine). “Top Gun: Maverick” star Lewis Pullman plays a mysterious character named Bob.

Pullman told Variety that his audition for “Thunderbolts*” was so secretive, it was almost like meeting with the FBI.

“It was a hell of an experience going out there and test screening. It felt like I was going into the FBI or something. It was all very locked and sealed. They’re like, ‘You’re lucky to hold onto a set of sides for longer than an hour.’ There were shredders everywhere. But Jake Schreier, the director, sat down with me and he told me the story, but I couldn’t read any script or anything. It was cool. It was kind of old fashioned in that sense. It was like, ‘And now by the campfire, I will tell you the story of Thunderbolts.’”

The superhero tentpole is releasing in theaters on May 2, 2025. Watch the special look below.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* sees one hell of a mishmash MCU team...wait for it...assemble (every time).

The lineup of shadow operatives and contract killers here is huge: Black Widow's Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ant-Man and the Wasp's Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Bob (Lewis Pullman) — all pulled together under Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

Thunderbolts* hits cinemas May 2, 2025.
Florence Pugh is leading Marvel's next superhero team up.

On Monday, Sept. 32, Marvel Studios debuted the first teaser for Thunderbolts*, with Pugh, 28, and David Harbour reprising their Black Widow roles of Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov. The new film sees Yelena return to her adoptive father Alexei, feeling a sense of depression following the events of that movie and Hawkeye.

Set to the PIxies' 1988 hit "Where Is My Mind?," Thunderbolts* meets many of its leads — the movie also features Marvel characters John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) — at standstills in their lives.

By the teaser's end, audiences also get a new glimpse at Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who was introduced Disney+'s 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Her character appears to be bringing this new team together.

An official longline for the movie describes Thunderbolts* as "an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits."
