"At no point did I think that we weren't going to get him back." Dogwoof has unveiled an official trailer for a thrilling underwater survival documentary titled Last Breath, the feature debut of filmmakers Richard da Costa & Alex Parkinson. This "docudrama" hybrid tells the story of commercial diver Chris Lemons, who went to work one day for a routine inspection of a drilling structure at the Huntington oil field, some 115 miles east of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. He was 262ft underwater when his umbilical line got snagged and severed, leaving him with only an emergency air tank - with only 5 minutes of air to breath, and a rescue 30 minutes away. The film utilizes extensive recreations to tell the story, along with amazing archival and black box footage from the actual incident. Looks chilling and remarkable, another intense survival doc to watch.

Here's the official UK trailer for Richard da Costa & Alex Parkinson's doc Last Breath, from YouTube:

Last Breath Doc Film

In 2012, diver Chris Lemons lay trapped under the North Sea. His umbilical cable was completely severed, leaving him without breathing gas or any connection to the dive bell. Alone in the dark waters without any means of communication, his chances of survival were slim. Docu-drama Last Breath recreates his story, placing the viewer at the heart of desperate attempts to reach him. Filled with emotional testimony, archive footage and fascinating technical detail, it is an edge-of-the-seat true story on a par with anything that James Cameron might have devised. Last Breath is co-directed by filmmakers Richard da Costa & Alex Parkinson ("River Monsters", "Legend Hunter"), both making their feature directorial debut. This premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year. Dogwoof will release Last Breath in UK cinemas starting April 5th next month. No official US release date is set. Stay tuned for more updates. Interested?

The harrowing 2019 documentary “Last Breath” is now getting its fictionalized treatment, with filmmaker Alex Parkinson returning to helm the star-studded adaptation.

“Last Breath,” which is directed by Parkinson and co-written by Parkinson, David Brooks, and Mitchell LaFortune, stars Woody Harrelson as a deep-sea diver who is tasked with saving his crewmate (Simu Liu) after he becomes untethered with only five minutes of oxygen left.

Finn Cole and Cliff Curtis also star.

The official synopsis reads: “‘Last Breath’ is a heart-pounding film that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface. Based on a true story, ‘Last Breath’ is an electrifying story about teamwork, resilience, and a race against time to do the impossible.”

Parkinson co-directed the original documentary with Richard da Costa. Parkinson told Deadline when the project was announced in 2022 that both films “touch on a lot of ideas; the strength of the human spirit, and the ability to hang on as well, this poor chap who is at the bottom of the sea bed, trying to cling on for as long as possible. It turns into this amazing race against time, which will play out in real time in the film. It’s still one of those things, where people don’t know how he survived.”

Parkinson continued, “He was conscious, with five minutes of oxygen, when that umbilical cord is severed. Suddenly he is in freezing water, and that’s the kind of thing you would feel immediately, and without electricity it is absolutely pitch black. It’s horrifying, but he managed to do everything right that he could to put himself in a position to be rescued. He’s 100 meters down, he’s got five minutes of gas; it’s all about the group of people he works with, coming together as a collective, overcoming insurmountable odds to complete an impossible rescue.”

“Last Breath” is produced by David Brooks, Paul Brooks, Hal Sadoff, Norman Golightly, Jeremy Plager, Stewart le Maréchal, Al Morrow, and Anna Mohr-Pietsch.

“Last Breath” premieres February 28 in theaters from Focus Features. Check out the trailer below.

Focus Features is officially set to release the highly anticipated survival thriller Last Breath in theaters nationwide on Friday, February 28th, 2025.

Helmed by filmmaker Alex Parkinson, and starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Finn Cole, and Cliff Curtis, the film is based on a true story following seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface.

More specifically, Last Breath is a narrative remake of the 2019 documentary directed by Parkinson and Richard da Costa. The documentary told the harrowing true story of a commercial diver who became untethered while diving 100 meters under the North Sea, with only five minutes of oxygen left. The divers' desperate rescue attempt showcased the dangers and challenges of working in the deep sea.

The film’s screenplay was crafted by Mitchell LaFortune, Alex Parkinson, and David Brooks, with Brooks also serving as a producer alongside Paul Brooks, Hal Sadoff, Norman Golightly, Jeremy Plager, Stewart le Maréchal, Al Morrow, and Anna Mohr-Pietsch.

The film's first trailer, which recently dropped, gives audiences a glimpse into the intense and gripping nature of the story. Harrelson plays Duncan Allcock, while Liu takes on the role of David Yuasa. Cole portrays the trapped diver, Chris Lemons, and Curtis plays Mike Adamson.

Given its creative team and stacked cast, Last Breath promises to be a heart-pounding cinematic experience that highlights the strength of the human spirit and the incredible lengths people will go to save a life.

The film recounts the events surrounding diver Chris Lemons, whose umbilical cable was severed during a deep-sea mission, leaving him trapped 100 metres (330 feet) below the surface. With no heat, no light, and only a few minutes of breathing gas, the situation became a desperate race against time. The film stars Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Cliff Curtis, and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), the latter playing Lemons.Online movie streaming services

This story was previously chronicled in a gripping 2019 British documentary of the same name, co-directed by Alex Parkinson and Richard da Costa. You can stream the documentary on Netflix – right HERE.

Parkinson, who also directs the narrative adaptation, co-wrote the screenplay with Mitchell LaFortune (Kandahar) and David Brooks. The film is produced by Brooks, Paul Brooks, Hal Sadoff, Norman Golightly, Jeremy Plager, Stewart Le Maréchal, Al Morrow, and Anna Mohr-Pietsch.

Last Breath is set to be released in US cinemas on 28 February and Australian cinemas on 8 May, 2025.

Here’s the trailer for the documentary – a riveting, claustrophobic watch.
Simple ‘race against time’ premises can be exciting. Especially if they are based on true stories. It adds a sort of authenticity to the experience while elevating the characters involved to epic, larger-than-life, status. Movies like Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” did this with the rescuers responsible for saving the lives of a Thailand soccer team caught in a cave back in 2018. Or Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” which chronicled the true story of Aron Ralston, who had to amputate his arm in order to escape being trapped by a boulder in Utah back in 2003. Truth, as the somewhat cliched expression goes, is stranger than fiction.

Which brings us to “Last Breath.” An upcoming scripted feature based on a dangerous deep sea rescue that occurred off the coast of Scotland back in 2012. A documentary version of the event was released on Netflix back in 2019 and was well-received. The upcoming fictional adaptation starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu, can surely capitalize on it being based on a true story. If it can successfully capture the inherent suspense of a sequence of events that actually happened, then it will surely pull in viewers.

Peaky Blinders' Finn Cole is lost at sea in the new trailer for Last Breath. The survival thriller, which is based on a harrowing true story, also stars Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu. Focus Features will release the film in theaters on February 28, 2025.

In Last Breath (which should not be confused with The Last Breath, a shark thriller from earlier this year), Cole plays Chris Lemons, a diver working on repairs below the treacherous North Sea. When his support vessel's navigation system fails, it ends up drifting away from him, snapping his umbilical cable and stranding him in the gloomy depths with mere minutes of oxygen. As his colleagues Duncan Allcock and David Yuasa (Harrelson and Liu) race to save him, he has to conserve his last breaths until rescue can arrive. The film also stars Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) and Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of Water). The real incident occurred in 2012, and was chronicled in a 2019 documentary also titled Last Breath; both the doc and the upcoming feature were directed by Alex Parkinson.

Who Are the Stars of 'Last Breath'?

British actor Cole broke out playing Michael Gray on the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders, and also starred on the TNT series Animal Kingdom. He has also starred in the films Locked In, Dreamland, and F9 (as a young Jakob Toretto); he can next be seen in the boxing drama In the Shadows. Famed for his role as the lovably naive Woody on Cheers, Harrelson was Oscar-nominated for his roles in The People vs. Larry Flynt, The Messenger, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He can next be seen in James L. Brooks' Ella McCay, and reprising his role as magician Merritt McKinney in Now You See Me 3. Canadian actor Liu first gained national fame on the CBC sitcom Kim's Convenience before attaining global stardom as the titular hero in the MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He can next be seen alongside Melissa Barerra in the sci-fi thriller series Copenhagen.

Last Breath was developed by Paul and David Brooks of Longshot Films. Hal Sadoff, Norman Golightly, Jeremy Plager, Stewart le Marechal, Al Morrow, and Anna Mohr-Pietsch will produce with the Brookses. Mitchell LaFortune, director Parkinson, and David Brooks wrote the script; the film is Parkinson's narrative feature debut.
