The chapter begins with the Israelites complaining about their hardships. Angered by their ingratitude, GOD sends a fire that destroys the outskirts of the camp. Moses prays, and the fire subsides.
As they eat, GOD’s wrath is kindled and a severe plague breaks out and kills some of them, this was perhaps those who were the ones who started the complaining. The place is named Kibroth Hattaavah (graves of craving or lustful ones) because they buried the people who had craved meat.
HIS Permissive Will. You want it, you got it, it is not MY plan, but you rejected MY plan and wanted your own plan. GOD’s permissive will is such that we get what we think we want, but it turns out to be the opposite of what we need.
The LORD had come to be in the midst of HIS people; HE desired to be there and wanted to lead them to the new land. The wish to go back to Egypt was a wish to go back to a time before GOD was in their midst, so it was a rebellion against HIM. They were focusing on Moses, but their rebellion was really against GOD.
