In a case where a suspect and two officers were all wounded by one single shot from the suspect’s gun, body camera video from the Louisville Metro Police Department does not show how the gun went off or who pulled the trigger.

On Nov. 19 in the Smoketown neighborhood, officers responded to an anonymous tip about a stolen car and encountered 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson.

The police video released shows selected shots of the altercation that ensued when officers attempted to detain and handcuff Thompson.

Thompson ends up on his stomach, refusing orders to put his hands behind his back. Minutes later, a muffled gunshot can be heard as Thompson screams. He was shot in the arm and torso. The same bullet hit Officer Brendan Koerner in the hand. Officer Laxman Acharya was shot in the leg.

The discharge of what LMPD identified as Thompson’s handgun raised questions about how the gun was fired. From bystander video, an officer can be seen deploying his baton.

”He was not striking him with the baton,” LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said. “He was just using it as a leverage tool to try to pull his (Johnson’s) arm out.”

In the body camera video, immediately before the gunshot, an officer appeared to say “I’ve got a hold of it.”

When asked about who could have pulled the trigger, Humphrey said it was still under investigation.

”I can tell you if that suspect had cooperated, that wouldn’t have happened,” Humphrey said. “So, regardless of how it happened, it’s his fault still.”

Humphrey said Officers Koerner and Acharya continue to recover at home. Thompson appeared in court Tuesday and remains in jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
