South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late Tuesday as he accused the country's main opposition party of being overly sympathetic to North Korea and other "anti-state" activities.

Opposition leaders called the move unconstitutional and vowed to fight back. Parliament passed a motion requiring Yoon to lift his declaration. Photos and videos showed parliamentary staffers spraying fire extinguishers at armed martial law forces as they tried to breach the National Assembly.

South Korean military vow to maintain martial law despite protests and parliament vote to overturn the declaration by president Yoon Suk Yeol.

Local broadcaster YTN, which theoretically is now under control of the military in accordance with martial law, quoted officials as saying the decree will remain in in effect until lifted by the president.

Earlier, South Korean parliament has voted to overturn a declaration after president Yoon Suk Yeol vowed to eradicate “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces”.
